Stan's NoTubes has just announced the introduction of its new S1 series of wheels, which are designed to be a cheaper and more burly alternative to its pre-existing MK3 line.

Available in widths ranging from 23mm to 38mm, the S1 line's goal is to have a wheel that covers everything from a svelte 2” XC tread right up to a mammoth 3.5” plus-bike tyre.
To create the S1 series Stan’s has beefed up its classic Crest, Arch and Flow rims, adding more material to the sidewalls and reworking their profile to be a little deeper with the aim of improving impact strength and stiffness.
Stan's has also introduced three additional rims to accommodate the wider end of the S1 range: the Sentry (32mm), the Baron (35mm) and the Major (38mm). These also feature the same reinforced sidewalls and exaggerated profile.
All of the S1 wheelsets will be built around Stan’s own Neo hubs, laced with 32 Sapim race spokes and brass nipples in both the front and rear. In a world of perilously low spoke counts and fancy lacing patterns the wheels appear refreshingly and reassuringly old school.
With a competitive price of US$455 (UK and Australian pricing to be announced) for any of the wheelsets, they may hold up as a reliable, budget option for the serial wheel destroyers among you.
