Castelli Gabba Pro Edition jersey - first look

http://ift.tt/QyPFuX

The Castelli Gabba Pro Edition jersey is remarkably similar to the standard – and highly regarded – Gabba jersey. In fact, aside from a beautiful presentation box and the fact that only 100 will be available, it is exactly the same – apart from one significant extra.

Packed inside the presentation box is a Staedler permanent marker – Castelli's way of 'hinting' that plenty of the Gabba line has found its way onto the backs of pro riders who are not sponsored by the Italian giants.

A permanent marker is included to black out those troublesome logos:

A permanent marker is included to black out those troublesome logos

Castelli told us that at last year's Milan-San-Remo, Ghent and Giro, the bad weather saw plenty of professional riders wearing Gabbas with the logos covered or coloured in, as it wouldn't do to promote a rival sponsor.

The Gabba is unique among cycling jerseys, because it is water resistant, windproof and still breathable. It's the ideal jersey for changeable weather, as has been seen in the early season classics. The jersey came from an idea by Cervélo Test Team rider Gabriel Rasch, hence the name 'Gabba' (as much as we'd like it to be named after The Ramones' call to arms).

The presentation box comes complete with quotes from pro riders including: 'Let's hope it rains on the way to Ghent tomorrow', 'The other teams hate it when it rains, we go to the front with our Gabbas', 'Rain, wind, cold I don't give a s**t I got my Gabba jersey'.

Quotes from the pros about the gabba jersey:

The Gabba Pro Edition jersey will be available exclusively through Wiggle, and will cost £150.

Americans close Pan Am MTB Championships on the podium

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Americans Stephen Ettinger and Mary McConneloug earned a pair of medals at the Pan American Continental Mountain Bike Championships Sunday in Brazil.

Ettinger claimed victory in the men’s cross-country race, while McConneloug placed third in the women’s cross-country race.

Ettinger got into the lead group of six riders immediately after the race started, and he rode with them until he attacked with three laps left. The explosive move, coupled with a rainstorm on the final lap that slowed down the course considerably, allowed Ettinger to earn the comfortable win.

Fellow American Spencer Paxson registered a fifth-place result.

McConneloug rode at the front during the opening half of the women’s race, but she dropped back in the hot conditions and eventually finished third. Teammate Erin Huck placed fourth after moving up from the seventh spot on the course.

On Saturday, American Matthew Branney rode to third place in the junior men’s downhill event.

Other Americans grabbing top-10 results in Brazil were Neilson Powless (fourth) and Sean Bennett (seventh) in the junior men’s cross-country race.

Greipel out of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix with collarbone injury

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

PARIS (AFP) — German rider Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) has been ruled out of the remainder of the spring classics with a collarbone injury, his team confirmed on Monday.

Greipel, 31, was injured after falling eight kilometers from the finish line as he was challenging for Sunday’s Gent-Wevelgem classic in Belgium.

“It’s a tough blow for Andre and for the team,” said Lotto manager Marc Sergeant. “He was our ticket for several races. In the Tour of Flanders and the Paris-Roubaix he could have done great support work for the team.”

Gent-Wevelgem was the second in the eight-race spring classics series.

Manitou Mattoc Pro suspension fork review

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

We were lucky to get a European exclusive first test of Manitou’s new, downhill-influenced Mattoc. If its initial performance lasts, it looks set to be a cost effective, high control winner.

The 35mm-legged, reverse arch chassis is slightly heavy and its narrow stance means it’s adequately rather than dramatically stiff. The push in, quarter turn, cam close Hexlock 15mm axle is potentially the fastest around, but there’s a real knack to working it.

The dual-chamber air spring technology comes straight from Manitou’s Dorado DH fork and offers a great mix of supple start and supportive mid stroke that gives great traction without obvious dive. The end stroke gets separate hydraulic bottom-out adjustment and a rubber bumper to control the final few millimetres.

Advanced fork fettlers will love the separate high- and low-speed compression damping adjustment, though the subtle changes make tuning patience a virtue. The low-speed adjustment stops short of full lockout, but that means you don’t sacrifice any small bump traction. As the Mattoc is new, reliability is unproven, but Dorados have a good reputation and so far it’s an outstanding fork for the money.

Will 2014 see the last epic battle in the Cancellara-Boonen rivalry?

Wilier Trestina GTR Gran Turismo review

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Wilier has a knack for getting the appearance of its bikes just right. The manufacturer may not have the presence of rival Italians Pinarello, Colnago, or Bianchi, but we can’t deny just how good the machines look.

With its black and hi-vis yellow paint scheme, the GTR oozes pure superbike from the first glance and, without looking over its component parts, we’d have guessed the Gran Turisimo would be significantly more expensive than its relatively modest £1799 price tag suggests.

  • Highs: Beautiful ride backed up with beautiful looks

  • Lows: Hefty wheel package, steep cassette

The GTR is very much in keeping with what you'd expect of a sportive bike from an Italian brand. Neither Colnago, Pinarello nor Bianchi tend to relax geometry – or compromise anything, for that matter – when designing a bike intended for the endurance rider, and the GTR is no different. In fact its shape is very much classic ProTour, with the wheelbase being just a few millimetres longer and the head-tube barely 10mm taller. The length of top-tube and reach are consistent and those frame angles haven’t been relaxed.

On the road that translates to a bike that feels flighty and swift. It carves through corners impressively; it's a bike we could easily have pushed harder on descents and through twists and turns, never reaching its limit before we reached ours.

The ride quality is impressive: it combines a firm efficient feel, which promises rapid acceleration on the flat, with a gliding character across broken and battered tarmac surfaces. On our section of broken unmetalled road, midway through the test loop, the GTR rolls with a smoothness comparable to Specialized’s Roubaix. If we had a cobbled classic sportive in mind then the GTR would be a bike we’d like to be astride.

We’ve been critical of Wilier in the past with regards to value for money, but for 2014 the firm has certainly addressed things in that arena. The GTR features a predominantly 105 drivetrain, but uses an FSA-built Wilier chainset using 50/34 rings. FSA also provides the brakes: these super stiff, good-looking units deliver ample power, but compared with Shimano’s 105 they do lack somewhat in terms of feel. As the weather took a turn for the worse midway through our test loop, we occasionally ended up overbraking on descents rather than feeding in the power to control speed.

Thankfully Wilier has also dropped using own brand tyres in favour of decent budget Vittorias; they may not be the lightest around but they’re hardwearing and have ample grip in all but the worst conditions. Wheels-wise, Wilier has gone with Shimano's budget R500s, the choice of many steeds in this price range. As we’ve said before, it’s a tough wheelset that’ll last and last and won’t let you down, but on the ascents we couldn’t help noticing the extra mass. Especially when paired with the budget tyres, the compact chainset's 34 inner ring reduces the ratio to aid climbing, but the race-orientated 11-25 cassette doesn’t quite offer the wide spread that we’d expect for a sportive special.

Overall, like so many bikes in this bracket the GTR doesn’t quite have the spec to match its potential. However, for the first time the price is far more competitive than Wilier has gone before – and it’s such a damn fine looker, and good bike to ride, that we’d be more than happy to have it in our stable.

Lauren Hall takes crafty win in hard-fought Gent-Wevelgem

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

GENT, Belgium (VN) — Lauren Hall (Optum Kelly Benefits) kicked to victory in an attack-riddled finale to win the women’s Gent-Wevelgem on Sunday.

Hall, 35, outfoxed an eight-rider breakaway, dashing ahead of Janneke Ensing (Boels-Dolmans) and Vera Koedooder (Bigla) to claim the flowers in the 115km race, held ahead of the men’s event in Belgium.

Hall, riding with the U.S. national team, made the selection when the race split on the penultimate climb with 35km to go. About 25 riders pulled clear, a group that quickly dissolved to eight, who then collaborated to carve out a race-winning two-minute lead.

The group began attacking with 5km to go, and Hall patiently marked the accelerations, biding her time for the final sprint. Ensing went first, drawing out Koedooder and Hall, who made easy work to claim the victory.

This was the first year that the race was a UCI-ranked race since its founding in 2012. Race officials are hoping to make the leg part of the Women’s World Cup, but right now, the race conflicts with the Trofeo Melinda World Cup stop, also held Sunday in Italy.

Rapha Super Lightweight jersey review

http://ift.tt/1odTkwO

When the mercury is uncomfortably high, a ride can quickly turn to a miserable experience in which survival becomes the key objective. Rapha’s Super Lightweight jersey is designed to evade these moments and, as we found during testing it in a recent Australian summer heat wave, it’s a top choice.

Featuring a triple blend of polyester fabrics, the jersey has a soft, comfortable feel on the skin along with a snug, form-fitting fit that feels near-perfect on an athletic build.

The fit is on the short side and must be complemented by a pair of bib-shorts. (The length provides little wasted material overlap when paired with Rapha's own Lightweight bib shorts – further increasing ventilation.

The rapha super lightweight jersey offers little privacy: There's little privacy with the Super Lightweight jersey

Looking at the near see-through construction, it’s not surprising that this jersey manages heat and sweat with ease – at just 118g for our small sample, it’s not far from being naked either. One tester pointed out that base-layer logos could easily be read through the jersey.

The mesh-like construction of this jersey does a raise a significant issue for those riding on a hot summer’s day: sun protection. There’s very little stopping one from getting burnt beneath the jersey, so sunscreen is needed far beyond the arms and neck.

This fourth security pocket is large enough for a common smart phone - pictured is a iphone 5 : A small ring facilitates access to the rear security pocket

A zippered pocket sits on top of the right elastic pocket – it's perfectly sized for a smartphone and features a sweatproof backing. A small zipper ring enables easy access to the pocket, even when sweaty or with gloves on.

Further details include backing material to the full-length zipper to ensure nothing gets caught or pinched, and a cover at the zipper’s top to prevent neck stubble irritation. Hidden reflective piping is given at the rear for the low-light visibility and a silicone gripper at the base ensures it all stays in place.

For such a lightweight garment, durability has been great. We had a mishap during our testing which left a tester with a cracked helmet, ripped shoe buckles, ground pedals, a broken bike and a fair bruise – yet the jersey had the smallest of tears in a rear pocket and nothing else to show. More impressively, Rapha offered to repair this free of charge, as part of its ‘repair service’.

The Super Lightweight jersey is brilliant in the heat, but needs a good lather of sunscreen beneath and isn’t for self-conscious. Like most things Rapha, the level of detail and performance comes with a top-end price tag.

Endura Xtract long sleeve jersey review

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Endura’s long since nailed the details of all-season trail kit, and the Xtract is the latest long-sleeve jersey to benefit from its wealth of knowledge. The pedigree is evident from the first time you pull it on; there’s a tangible purpose and quality.

For fit, the Xtract is more akin to a road or cross-country jersey, and is snugger around the body than some. The arms are perfect for length, and although some taller testers would’ve preferred an extra inch in length from our size Medium, the whole thing fits well. It leaves room for a baselayer, but the cut is close enough to alleviate any unwanted billowing.

The Airtex construction means it wicks sweat well, and it’s comfortable against the skin as a first layer. The trio of rear pockets is extremely handy, and a good size to cargo just about anything you need, while the detailing is subtle with reflective print on the sleeves and rear.

We also found the Xtract combines with Endura’s own (superb) lightweight MTR shell to great effect.

Once you start pedalling, the Xtract works brilliantly. The fit keeps everything where it should be and the ergonomics are good – the pockets are easy to access and the half-zip is smooth and easy to use on the bike.

The Xtract’s biggest attribute is its ability to double as a mid-layer for cold spells and a standalone jersey in summer.

Vitus Venon VRS review

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Vitus’s revival is continuing a pace thanks to online megastore Chain Reaction. By becoming an online-only brand they can offer value for money to match that of the likes of Canyon, Rose and Boardman.

  • Highs: Great value package, race bike handling

  • Lows: Too much road vibration gets passed onto the rider

  • Buy if: You want a race bike bargain and are prepared to spend a bit of extra to improve its comfort

The original Venon was a simple, round oversized tubed affair, but this new Venon VRS is a collection of swooping lines and tapered tube shapes. Up front a short (150mm) tapered head tube keeps things low and racy, a feature only enhanced by the short wheelbase and straight fork.

In ideal conditions and on the best road surfaces the VRS is a belter; potential problems rear their heads if those situations are likely to be few and far between. On the average-to-poor road surfaces of the UK, we found that this bike could do with a little enhancement.

The Venon is impressive on the scales for its price tag – which is cheaper than many of its direct competitors. The same can be said of the equipment: a drivetrain that’s predominantly Shimano’s all-new 11-speed Ultegra offers a massive boost to proceedings, and the Easton wheelset isn’t far behind either. Obvious savings have been made with the FSA Gossamer chainset and Tektro brakes; but neither have shown themselves to be anything less than highly capable, thanks to the slick shift of the FSA rings and the good quality cartridge pads on the Tektro dual pivots.

The Vitus saddle bears more than a passing resemblance to a model from Charge. Its swoopy shape is hugely comfortable and a definite bonus to the bike, especially as we were grateful all the extra comfort it offered. The decent wheels are shod with some fat rubber from Kenda – they're a claimed 25c, but with the Verniers they’re far, far closer to 29mm wide.

That could be considered a bit much for a bike on which the geometry suggests racing potential, yet we actually came away thankful that these were fitted – because we found the Venon a very firm bike to ride. On smooth sections of tarmac it flows and accelerates with the best of them, but as soon as you find coarser, broken surfaces the Venon suffers with plenty of chatter and vibration. That meant we did too: up front the slender aluminium bar doesn’t help to mute the hand-numbing high frequency noise. At the back it’s a similar situation thanks to the alloy 31.6 seatpost: even with plenty exposed, on this sloping frame it doesn’t help.

Dropping a few PSi on the tyres can and did counter this, but that meant the Venon felt more sluggish than it should on the climbs. We lived with it that way rather than suffer the vibration discomfort.

We wouldn’t want to discount the VRS completely, because the keen pricing that's been achieved means you could enhance the bike and still come away with a competitive deal. We’d recommend an immediate switch to a quality carbon seat post and a better bar: just giving the VRS this comfort overhaul would add plenty of plus points and push it much further up in our estimation.

Specialized unveils 650B Stumpjumper FSR EVO models

http://ift.tt/1gKrYuj

Once we saw that Specialized would offer 650B tires earlier this year, it could only be a matter of time before complete bikes would follow. It appears the wait is over: Specialized has just added two 650B Stumpjumper FSR models to its webpage.

The first — but certainly not the last — Specialized models to get mid-sized wheels will be two bikes in the Stumpjumper FSR EVO line. 'EVO' denotes bikes in the Specialized line that have more gravity-oriented geometry and feature more suspension travel than the standard models.

Both 650B Stumpjumper EVO models have 150mm of rear wheel travel and sport features one would expect on a modern trail bike, including 142x12 rear thru axles, ISCG-05 chainguide tabs and internal routing for dropper seatposts.

The US$6,500 Stumpjumper FSR Expert Carbon EVO has a carbon front triangle with an aluminum rear end. Its spec’d with a SRAM X01 drivetrain, Shimano XT M-785 brakes, a custom-tuned Fox CTD shock w/AutoSag, and a 150mm RockShox Pike RC fork.

The US$3,400 Comp EVO has a full aluminum frame. The Comp Evo will come equipped with a SRAM 2x10 drivetrain with a mix of X9 and X7 level components, Shimano Deore M-615 brakes, a custom-tuned Fox CTD shock w/AutoSag, and a 150mm RockShox Revelation RC3 fork.

British Cycling and the FA combine in mission to get more women into sport

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

British Cycling, the national body for cycling, and the Football Association have joined forces to encourage more women to get active.

The two governing bodies have launched a new Kick Start Your Ride initiative urging women to cycle to football matches, including organised Breeze bike rides for women attending England Women's World Cup qualifiers, FA Women's Super League (WSL) matches and The FA Women's Cup Final.

Great Britain Cycling Team stars Jess Varnish and Vicky Williamson, and England women's internationals Gemma Bonner and Fara Williams launched the enterprise at an event in Manchester, and the British Cycling-hosted bike rides will begin with England's next FIFA Women's World Cup 2015 qualifier against Montenegro, taking place at the AMEX Community Stadium in Brighton on Saturday 5 April.

Commenting at the launch, British Cycling’s women’s network project manager, Natalie Justice, said: “This is about two sports coming together to inspire women to try something new. The opportunity to go on a group bike ride with friends, mums, daughters with the prize of getting to watch some exciting football at the end of it has all the ingredients of a fun day out and we hope to see hundreds of women getting involved over the coming season.”

Kelly Simmons, director of the national game and women’s football at the FA, said: “This unique partnership shows the benefits that two national governing bodies can bring when working together for one common aim – getting more women active.

“Participation levels are crucial for all sporting bodies and we’re delighted to work with British Cycling to get more women into both football and cycling.”

The scheme will now be continued at local level through the 18 FA WSL clubs throughout the upcoming season.
