KMC CrossFest moves from Providence to Connecticut

http://ift.tt/2cH2FxN

The storied Providence, Rhode Island, cyclo-cross race, now the KMC 'CrossFest, has been forced to find a new venue so that the event could continue to grow. It had become the most popular and heavily attended cyclo-cross race on the New England calendar, and as such news of the move was a bitter pill to swallow for much of the cycling community. Roger Williams Park had become known for its challenging courses, festival atmosphere, and memorable races.

Event Director Richard Fries explained the situation through the event website.

"We realized this past spring that we had exceeded the capacity of that park and, frankly, that entire city. We heard your comments on parking and lodging and crime," Fries said."And despite our generating more than $2 million of economic impact each year, the city steadily raised every fee and restriction to levels that could only be described as prohibitive. We would have had to raise entry fees by $20 to remain there. We did not want to do that to our customers."

The race organization then reached an agreement with Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, located on 500 acres of rolling hills in sleepy northeast Connecticut, 38 miles from the Providence venue. The land has held racetracks for 76 years, and an 18-hole golf course for 65 years. This new venue solves the problem of parking, has an on-site restaurant and will be able to hold night racing under the lights of the racetrack.

A challenge at the new venue appears to be that most suitable housing for the athletes is about 15 miles away in towns like Southbridge and Sturbridge. In addition, contractual agreements that the racetrack has with beverage vendors will affect the beer garden, which had been so popular in Providence.

Thompson Speedway has been owned and operated by the Hoenig family for four generations, since before it became a racetrack. Its birth was actually the result of an act of nature.

USA Cycling releases 2017 national championships calendar

http://ift.tt/2cH2FxN

USA Cycling today released its schedule for the 2017 national championships, including events in cyclocross, mountain bike, road and track. BMX events will be announced at a later date.

The biggest change in the calendar is the pro road and time trial events' move from the originally scheduled venue in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Knoxville, Tennessee. The three-day US pro championships will take place June 23-25 to line up better with most European national championships.

Masters Road National Championships have also been moved from Winston-Salem to Columbia County, Ga., and Para-Cycling Road National Championships moved to Grand Junction, Colorado.

"This move will allow Winston-Salem to focus on continuing to build its exciting UCI 1.1 Winston-Salem Cycling Classic while ensuring that USA Cycling delivers an excellent customer experience for our important Master and Para-Cycling athletes," USA Cycling said in its Friday announcement. "Para-Cycling Road National Championships will run May 4-7, while Masters Road National Championships will be June 1-4 and will feature the iconic Fort Gordon Hills Road Race course and the time trial at Clarks Hill Lake."

In another change from this year, the Professional Criterium and Team Time Trial National Championships will join Amateur Road National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky, June 29-July 2 after the Blue Grass State hosted a successful 2016 Amateur Road National Championships over the summer.

“The 2017 calendar of national championship events pairs our top annual races with very worthy host cities,” said USA Cycling CEO Derek Bouchard-Hall. “Our events range from coast to coast, north to south and everywhere in between. We are thrilled to bring our national championships to cycling fans in nearly every corner of the country.”

Javier Moreno signs with Bahrain Merida for 2017

http://ift.tt/2cH2FxN

Bahrain Merida today announced the signing of Spaniard Javier Moreno for the 2017 season. The 32-year-old comes to the new team after spending five years with Movistar.

In his 11-year professional career, Moreno has won the overall at Vuelta Asturias and Vuelta a Castilla y Leon. He also won Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid and stages in Asturias and Vuelta a Andalucia.

Moreno won’t be looking for individual results with his new team, however, as he’s been signed to back Vincenzo Nibali in the big tours.

"I am good climber and I am good in short individual time trials too,” Moreno said. “I know that I can do good performances in one-week races. But I don't think that it is my only goal in a big team like Bahrain Merida. I have a huge experience working for big leaders like Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde, and my feeling is that I can do the same work for Vincenzo Nibali and the other leaders of my new team.”

Moreno said his big target next year will be the Giro d’Italia, a race he crashed out of this year with a broken collarbone. Nibali has won the Giro twice in 2013 and again this season.

"My best performances are always in the first months of the season, January and February, but in the month of May too. So I always had a big motivation for the Giro of Italy,” Moreno said. “I never can run in all my life until 2016. And this year I had an accident and broke my collarbone, so now my motivation is the highest possible for the Giro of Italy of 2017. I really want to be there again and to support one of our leaders in the fight for the victory.”

Bardet 'amazed' by Wiggins' TUEs ahead of Grand Tours

http://ift.tt/2cH2FxN

AG2R La Mondiale's Romain Bardet told the French newspaper Lemonde this week that he was "amazed" by Bradley Wiggins' UCI-approved use of a powerful steroid before Grand Tours and called for more stringent regulation of the Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) system.

Wiggins, who won the Tour de France in 2012, recently made headlines when hackers leaked his TUE history. In total, six TUEs were issued during Wiggins’ road racing career. Three intramauscular injections of Triamcinolone acetone were of particular concern, with each usage applied before major Grand Tours, including the 2012 Tour.

In an interview conducted in Italy ahead of Saturday's Il Lombardia, Bardet endorsed the idea that athletes who need such drugs to treat their ailments should be forced to sit out of competition.

advertisement

"We think the rules are too permissive and that there are abuses," Bardet told Lemonde. "They are too lax, so there is a flaw in the system. When there is a flaw, some minds see it as a blank check, permission to circumvent the rules.

"Obviously, there are exceptions for some very specific profiles, since there is no rule without exception," Bardet said. "The solutions, I do not have them. Clearly, I would prefer that we know all TUEs that everyone has. But this I do not think is the right solution. The right solution when you are sick is not to compete.

"Scientifically, one must be able to know the effects of treatment and at what point it is no longer critical in the performance of the athlete. The rules should have clear and utterly strict prohibitions."

Bradley Wiggins explains TUE use, asthma and allergies

http://ift.tt/2cH2FxN

In an extensive interview with the Guardian, Bradley Wiggins has opened up properly for the first time about his controversial use of TUEs during his cycling career, his long standing allergies and asthma, his relationship with former Team Sky doctors Geert Leinders and Richard Freeman, and the ethical boundaries that his TUE use have thrown up.

Wiggins, who won the Tour de France in 2012, hit the headlines a fortnight ago when the hackers calling themselves Fancy Bears leaked Wiggins’ TUE history. In total six TUEs were issued during Wiggins’ road racing career, however the three intramauscular injections of Triamcinolone acetonide raised eyebrows, with each usage applied before major Grand Tours, one of which - the Tour de France in 2012 – Wiggins won.

Although Wiggins and Team Sky never broke any rules with their application and use of the substance, it raised eyebrows with several respected doctors questioning the timing and nature of the TUE use.

In the aftermath of the revelations, Wiggins appeared on a BBC television show but that also created more questions than answers.

However in an exclusive interview with William Fotheringham, Wiggins has talked about his long-standing allergies, and what led him to apply and take several TUEs.

Bradley Wiggins' TUE use

• June 13, 2008: Salbutamol (200ug dosage, inhalation as needed for 12-months)
• December 12, 2008: Salbutamol (250ug dosage, inhalation as needed for 12-months)
• December 16, 2008: Salbutamol (2 puffs dosage, 2 times per day for 12-months), Formoterol (2 puffs dosage, 2 times per day for 12-months), Budesonide (2 inhalations dosage, 2 times per day for 12-months

Bennett leads Ireland into World Championships

Cycling Ireland has named their 12-rider squad for October’s World Championships with Sam Bennett and Nicolas Roche spearheading the team.

“Doha will see a lot of fast races” said Cycling Ireland Technical Director Brian Nugent.

“We have selected a team with strong riders across all categories, the profile for the courses are fairly flat, so there should be intense racing, which could come down to bunch sprints. The time trial courses will be fast too, and after a strong showing at the European Championships last month, we are hoping for some top performances from the team.”

Bennett will lead the team in the men’s road race with Matt Brammeier and Ryan Mullen protecting their sprinter. Mullen will also take part in the time trial, with Roche also competing in the discipline.

Anna Turvey is set to be Ireland’s only representative in the women’s side, and will compete in the individual time trial.

LottoNL-Jumbo and Dimension Data suffer attempted burglaries at Eneco Tour

http://ift.tt/2cH2FxN

Dutch media has reported that both the LottoNL-Jumbo and Dimension Data teams suffered attempted break-ins during the Eneco Tour.

LottoNL-Jumbo confirmed to Cyclingnews that thieves had tried to break into their truck, where all the team’s bike and equipment is kept. The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, 22 September while they were staying at the NH Hotel in the south of Maastricht. Fortunately for the team, the would-be thieves were unable to break the locks on the truck and left empty-handed.

Dimension Data were staying at the same hotel, according to the 1limburg.nl website, and the thieves also tried their luck with the team’s truck but, again, left with nothing.

Travelling around with thousands of Euros worth of equipment, cycling teams and riders are no strangers to burglary attempts. Last season, Sonny Colbrelli’s team issue bike was stolen from his garage. At the 2013 World Championships in Florence, the Danish team had 30 bikes and 50 sets of wheels taken by thieves, the Russian squad also suffered a theft.

A few months later, at the start of the following season Cannondale had €100,000 worth of equipment taken from their service course and this season Cult Energy had to leave the Tour de Haut Var after their bikes were taken.

Wout Poels re-signs with Team Sky on a three-year deal

http://ift.tt/2cH2FxN

Wout Poels has re-signed with Team Sky on a three-year deal. The 28-year-old, who told Cyclingnews in September that he would like to target either the Giro d’Italia or Vuelta a Espana in 2017, has been a key part in Chris Froome’s last two Tour de France winning teams.

This year Poels also became the first Team Sky rider to win a Monument when he claimed victory in Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

“I'm really happy. The deal is also for three years so it shows that the team has confidence in me and I'm confident in the team. That's really nice. For me it wasn't a difficult decision to stay. I've really enjoyed the last two years,” he said in statement on the team’s website.

Poels signed for Team Sky from Etixx-QuickStep at the start of 2015 and quickly became an important player in week-long stage races and Grand Tours. His climbing ability, coupled with his attacking nature, transferred into the one-day arena but at this year’s Tour de France he was one of the strongest riders in the second half of the race.

“That was really amazing,” he said in relation to helping Froome win two Tours.

“I remember at the start of last season I wanted to go to the Tour and everyone was saying it was really hard just to make the selection. There are so many great riders on this team, so it was a big goal just to go and then to do a really good job over there. This year was the same again. It's really nice to work with Chris. It's really special that he's been able to win it three times, and to have been part of two of those is really nice. For me personally it was a really nice experience and I hope we can do it again in the future.”

Flu forces Contador out of Il Lombardia

http://ift.tt/2cH2FxN

Alberto Contador has been forced to skip Il Lombardia, one of his final races in Tinkoff colours, due to flu. On Thursday, Contador had posted a photo of himself training on the rollers saying that the autumn rain had taken its toll on him and he confirmed on Friday morning that he would not be present on the start line in Como.

“Goodbye @Il_lombardia, after preparing myself and looking after myself, the flue stops me,” he wrote. “Good luck in the final race of the WorldTour @tinkoff_team.”

Contador had been due to close out his time at the Tinkoff team with appearances at Il Lombardia and the Abu Dhabi Tour, as he confirmed earlier this month. The team had hoped he could send the squad off with a final WorldTour victory. Rafal Majka confirmed on Facebook that he would replace the Spaniard in the final WorldTour race of the season, stating that it would be his final race of the year.

"My legs feel tired and they aren't the way that they were at the Tour de France and the Olympic Games in Rio," Majka said. "My goal is to help the boys in getting the best possible result for the course."

Contador has had a mixed season with early season victories let down by crashes at the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana. In an exclusive interview with Cyclingnews earlier this month, Contador said that while he was content with how he had performed throughout the season he was not entirely happy with the end result.

Tinkoff's team for Il Lombardia are: Rafal Majka, Roman Kreuziger, Jesper Hensen, Pavel Brutt, Sergio Paulinho, Pawel Poljanski, Matteo Tosatto, Michael Gogl, .

Van der Haar will return to action in Gieten for Hansgrohe Superprestige opener

http://ift.tt/2cH2FxN

After delaying the start to his 2016-17 cyclo-cross campaign, Lars van der Haar (Giant-Alpecin) confirmed through his team on Thursday that he will start the first round of the Hansgrohe Superprestige Sunday in Gieten.

The runner-up to Wout van Aert in last season's World Championships injured his hamstring during the run-up to this season and had to scrub plans to open the 2016-17 World Cup series in the US at CrossVegas and Jingle Cross.

"It's going well at the moment and there have been more ups than downs," he said in a statement released by the team. "I can train more or less pain-free, but of course, I need to be cautious to not have several high-intensity training sessions following each other closely, to avoid facing a setback."

advertisement

Van der Haar's return will be welcome news for Dutch cyclo-cross fans after 2015 World Champion Mathieu van der Poel was also sidelined following knee surgery. In their absence, the Belgian wold champion Van Aert dominated both US World Cups races, overcoming an early crash in CrossVegas to comfortably solo in for the win, then being delayed by a mechanical at Jingle Cross, once again having to fight through traffic before soloing away to a seemingly easy victory.

Van der Haar said his first goal will be to get back to 100 percent fitness and "gradually" work toward his previous level.

"As soon as that goal is reached I want to focus on results again and compete for podium finishes," he said. "But I expect that will first take at least another month or so and then we’ll set specific goals as that doesn't make any sense at this time. For sure, it will be difficult to have ambitions in the classifications because I will loose some ground in the first races in comparison to the competition. Hopefully, I am at full strength again to defend my European jersey in October."

Head on over to the Garmin website and you'll find a retail price of £379.99, but those lucky enough to have an Aldi on their doorstep will be able to grab one for just £179.99 — that's if stocks aren't already depleted on this stonking store-only deal.

Aldi has also turned its attention towards a more premium 'Pro-Cycling' clothing line for roadies. For a penny under £30 there's a nylon jersey which features a glow in the dark print, reflective detailing and multiple pockets.

On top of that, literally if you like, Aldi will be selling an insulated winter cycling jacket, which uses thermal panels, a stand up collar plus similar glow in the dark print and reflective highlights as the jersey. To match, there's also a pair of bib tights with thermal fleece panels, a front zip and more glow in the dark print — priced at £29.99.

Remember to head down to your local store ASAP if you want to snap any of this little lot up.

Hope's prototype inline hydro brakes win 3 Peaks CX

http://ift.tt/2dqGrja

Hope recently announced the release of its 4-pot calipers for Shimano and SRAM hydro road brakes. Intended to be fitted as an upgrade over stock calipers, they are said to improve pad clearance, power and modulation.

Hope employee, Paul Oldham won this year's brutal Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross race on a Scott Addict CX fitted with the trick new brakes alongside some prototype, crosstop hydro levers.

Crosstop, or inline levers, are popular at events like the Three Peaks where being able to brake from multiple positions can greatly reduce hand fatigue over such a long ride.

However, regular mechanical inline levers have always been a compromise as they invariably introduce slop into the system, making for less direct feeling braking.

Over to you: Is indoor training a necessary evil, or just evil?

http://ift.tt/2dqGrja

As the days get shorter and the temperature plummets, cyclists begin self-sorting into groups. Some of us dig out the lights, the warm clothes, the thicker tires and keep grinding along. Some of us pull out the trainer and spin up a sweat inside. And some of us look at those two options, wrinkle our faces quizzically, and settle in on the couch with our feet up and motivation down.

Which type are you?

Clearly, geography and family status play huge roles. I remember years back, when single and living in southern California, being utterly perplexed as to why anyone would even own a trainer, much less ride one regularly. Fast forward nearly 20 years and I was on the other side of the coin at the San Francisco launch of Zwift. Now living in snowy Colorado with two kids and a wife who works full-time, the idea of entertaining indoor riding at weird hours made sense to me. My younger, childless colleagues stared at the indoor training software with that perplexed look on their faces...

advertisement

Riding a bike inside does make you question things. Things like, why are you doing all this in the first place? Do you ride bikes outside for the fun or the fitness? Are they intertwined? And what could possibly make a grown adult — who is in no danger of a pro contract — feel the compulsion to pedal a bicycle indoors?

Riding a bike outside when it is cold can cause similar self questioning. But, if dressed properly, you can still have some good fun, and getting some fresh air and endorphins is always good for your head, if not your legs. But then there's the prospects of black ice on the road, cleaning a filthy bike in the freezing cold, and spending more time getting into your Michelin suit than actually riding...

So, over to you... Will you be riding inside this winter? And why, for Pete's sake, will you do such a thing?

Factor One aero road bike

It’s finally here, and we can’t wait to get out riding. The Factor One is a very exciting bike: it’s from a small brand, but with massive heritage. Factor Bikes was formed nearly ten years ago in the UK as a showcase for the engineering expertise of Norfolk-based motorsports company bf1 systems, and it quickly blew people away with the superbikes it produced.

This latest model keeps the distinctive 'Twin-Vane' down tube to help funnel wash from the front wheel through the frame rather than around — a feature introduced on predecessor the Vis Vires. It’s also got an integrated one-piece carbon cockpit and aero details like hidden rear brakes, an aero seatpost and scalloping on the top tube. Elsewhere there’s Dura-Ace Di2 with a 53/39t crankset paired to a 11-28t cassette, and it runs on Black Inc. carbon clinchers. We’ll be posting a full review very soon.

Dangerous lorries to be banned from London streets

http://ift.tt/2dqGrja

Promising "bold action" to protect cyclists and pedestrians in the capital, London's mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled plans to ban heavy goods vehicles with poor driver's cab visibility from the streets of London.

The new proposals were announced this morning and involve a star-rating system that determines the risk from both construction and heavy goods vehicles on a scale of zero to five. As many as 35,000 vehicles could be removed from the city's streets by 2020 if the plans go ahead.

Clear evidence

advertisement

“I’m not prepared to stand by and let dangerous lorries continue to cause further heartbreak and tragedy on London’s roads," said Khan this morning. “The evidence is clear: HGVs have been directly involved in over half of cycling fatalities over the last two years, and we must take bold action to make our roads safer for both cyclists and pedestrians.

“I’m determined to ensure the most dangerous zero star-rated lorries are removed from our roads completely by 2020. Our groundbreaking Direct Vision Standard will be the first of its kind in the world, directly addressing the issue of lethal driver blind-spots. I’m also proud that TfL will lead by example and will not use any zero-star lorries in its supply chain from the new financial year.”

The Mayor's office estimates that over the past two years HGVs were involved in 23% of pedestrian deaths and 58% of cyclists deaths in London, despite accounting for just 4% of the miles driven in the city. In total, nine cyclists and 66 pedestrians were killed in the capital last year, according to Transport for London (TfL).

5 tips for controlling snacking

http://ift.tt/2dqGrja

Dietician Aisling Pigott, from the British Dietetic Association, offers some advice on getting your snack balance right...

1. Spot snack times

“Cyclists can see a surge in appetite for up to three days after a long race. Even if you’re trying to manage your weight, avoid overly extreme notions like stopping snacking altogether, but plan to have healthy balanced meals and snack options for when you need them. This prevents common cycles of guilt and overeating.”

2. Stick to tea times

“Never skip meals to lose weight,” Pigott advises. “Regulating mealtimes in a routine prevents snacking, as athletes feel more in control and ‘in tune’ with their hunger and satiety levels. Be mindful and appreciative of what you’re eating too — turn off the TV and focus on your food and you’ll feel less likely to reach for the biscuit tin.”

advertisement

3. Select suitable snacks

“On training days snacks such as homemade banana bread (reduce the fat by replacing butter with apple purée in the recipe) or dried fruit are carb-filled for fuelling, but on non-exercise days or for shorter rides eat yoghurt and fruit for a quick energy boost without excessive calories.”

4 Handy in the kitchen

“Make sure meals contain starchy carbs, such as pasta, potato or rice, ideally in a portion about the size of your fist; protein from meat or pulses about the size of the palm of your hand and fruit or vegetables — ideally taking up about a third or more of your plate. This balance reduces the risk of snacking and overeating later in the day.”

5. Use mind control

“Psychological and practical prompts I use with athletes include: Stop using the word reduce — use the word control instead. Plan your snacks ahead of time to avoid guilt and don’t bring unhealthy snacks into the house to begin with,” says Pigott. “Remember that a craving only lasts for 20 minutes, so get out and do something before eating.”
