If you really, really want to avoid mud and spray from your front wheel then you could do a lot worse than POWA’s DFender guard, although the price is truly eye-watering for a plastic mudguard.
According to the website, it was “designed in the heat and slutch (sic) of DH world cup competition”. We’re not sure what slutch is and we’re not sure we want to find out, but fitting and coverage are certainly up to the job of demanding competition as well as everyday riding.
Fitment is via a machined alloy bracket and a thumbwheel bolt over the fork crown. This is aided by a series of rubber bumpers to avoid rattles and protect your forks, with the result that the guard is incredibly solid in use.
It's available in versions to fit most Fox and RockShox forks
The downside is you need to buy the correct model for your fork (POWA supplies adapters for all Fox models, and RockShox is available too), although fitting wasn’t as complicated as it initially appeared.
