Blaze Laserlights are illuminating London's hire bikes with a little help from the Force

Blaze's Laserlight, a safety device for urban cyclists, is to be fitted across London's entire cycle hire fleet, with sporting stars Jessica Ennis-Hill, Jenson Button and Rory McIllroy starring in a Star Wars-themed video showcasing the popular Santander-sponsored bicycles' upgrade.

It's a big moment for a brand that launched as a single product on crowdfunding site Kickstarter in 2012. Created by designer and entrepreneur Emily Brooke, the Laserlight, which gives motorists advance warning of cyclists on the road, has sold well online and through big stores such as Evans Cycles – but supplying such a huge number will surely provide a massive boost for Blaze.

The Laserlight projects a image of a bicycle onto the road 6m ahead of the cyclist using a green direct-diode laser, alerting drivers ahead on the road or at junctions to the presence of a cyclist. The units are waterproof and built to withstand vibration and heat fluctuations, and also eye-safe so there's no worry about causing damage if you do flash someone in the face – though we'd certainly recommend you don't.

The London hire cycle fleet is 11,500-strong; the machines are colloquially known as 'Boris bikes' after the incumbent mayor of London Boris Johnson and are currently sponsored by the Santander banking group, hence the name Satander cycles. A trial of the Blaze Laserlight was conducted earlier in 2015; it's based on the success of this initial test that the lights are being rolled out across the entire fleet.
