As five-time Red Bull Rampage rider Paul Basagoitia continues to recover in hospital from a heavy crash, the Road2Recovery fundraising page set up to help him is struggling to cope with the support flooding in.
Basagoitia crashed hard on a huge step-down during his run at this year’s Rampage finals last week, and was rushed straight to the intensive care unit by helicopter. He was diagnosed with shattered vertebrae in his back, and according to fellow rider Cam Zink he underwent a 9-hour emergency operation.
As one of the bravest and most stylish riders out there (see video above), the wider MTB community has rallied to support him, and an #irideforpaul page was set up on Road2Recovery, a website dedicated to providing financial assistance to extreme sports athletes and their families.
It’s struggled to keep up with interest, and the page has been loading intermittently this morning (20 October). At the time of writing, the campaign has raised $4,427 / £2858 / AU$6076 – or 4% of the $100,000 / £64,567 / AU$137,238 goal. Road2Recovery say they’re “currently laying out a path to recovery for him and his family. Unfortunately even the best insurance will fall short in many areas.”
His girlfriend Nichole Munk said yesterday on the Road2Recovery page: “His chest tube that was put in to assist with access to his spine during surgery was removed today and he is such a fighter that he is already looking forward to rehab! This is all new territory for us and we are flooded with information right now, but he will beat this! Thank you to all the riders, sponsors, friends and people involved with the event that have shared their support."
You can make a donation to Paul Basagoitia’s Road2Recovery fund, but be aware that the website is getting a lot of interest right now.
