Marin’s back to basics plus bike is one to watch

It’s safe to say that the pricing of most plus-sized bikes will keep them firmly out of the hands of most riders for a little while yet, and that’s why it is so refreshing to see this £750 / $989 27.5+ bike from Marin (Aus pricing TBC).

(Want to know more about 27.5+ – or 650b, or 6Fatty, as it's also known? Here's our handy guide.)

The Pine Mountain 1 allows riders to feel the unique ride of a plus bike at a price that doesn’t offend. You won’t find any carbon here; no suspension either. The only bouncy bits are the 2.9in Schwalbe Nobby Nic tyres – and that’s definitely no bad thing, after all – it’s very rare that we get a bike in that is this pure.

The 4130 chromoly steel frame blends retro elegance with practical features – in fact the Pine Mountain frame comes ready kitted out for expedition, with rack and mudguard eyelets and no fewer than three bottle mounts. The 100mm suspension-corrected rigid fork is also made from trusty chromoly and, along with a matching stem, brings a splash of brightness to an otherwise fairly subtle machine.

The geometry is quite aggressive for a bike of this kind, with the rigid fork of the Pine Mountain pointing out at 69 degrees and lengthy top tube and wheelbase figures dished out across each of the five available frame sizes. The handlebar and stem are sensibly sized at 740mm and 90mm respectively.
