The team from BikeRadar and our sister mag What Mountain Bike have been busy putting a load of budget mountain bikes to the test. If you're looking for a full-suspension ride, then the £1,500 price point (about $2,300) is a strong starting point.

We put the Norco Fluid 7.2, Vitus Escarpe VR, Boardman FS Pro, Giant Anthem 3, Scott Spark 760, Diamondback Myers 3.0, Forme Ripley 001, Whyte 901 and the Haibike Freed 7.1 through their paces.

At this price point, hardtails are starting to tend towards more specialist geometry, suited either for XC or trail riding. Many bikes come with a dropper seatpost, a definite plus-point, though don't expect to see top of the range options. Tubeless-compatible wheels are also something to look out for, as running tubeless is a quick and easy way of dropping a lot of weight, plus tubeless tyres are more robust and puncture resistant – bonus!

We'll be rolling out full reviews of the cream of the budget MTB crop – stay tuned over the coming weeks…
