Austria's Matthias Brändle used stage 4 at the Tour of Denmark on Friday to show off his form ahead to next week's UCI Road World Championships time trial, winning the 17.8km individual test in Randers by 34 seconds over Martin Anderson (ToftBHS - Almeborg-Bornholm) and 37 seconds over Michael Valgren (Astana).
"I only had one win until now; it has not been the season I wished for," Brändle said. "I was not selected for the Tour de France, and it was one of the biggest disappointments of my career after I had trained hard and researched the courses with my bike.
"I was here three or four years ago in Denmark, and I was third or fourth in the TT, and this time I thought I want to make it better and today I was able to do that," he said. "Today was a course that suited me pretty well. I went full gas from the beginning, and when I crossed the line, I knew it would be a ride for the win."
Brändle's Trek-Segafredo teammate Mads Pedersen finished fourth, also 37 seconds down to maintain his overall lead heading into Saturday's final stage. Pedersen leads Valgren in the general classification by eight seconds, with stage 1 winner Casper Pedersen (Team Giant - Castelli) in third, 40 seconds down.
"I was waiting for Mads because he is also really good like he was two weeks ago [in Potiou-Charentes]," Brändle said. "I am just super happy it happened, and also that Mads could keep the leader's jersey. It was a good day for the team."
Saturday's final stage will take the peloton over 198km from Ebeltoft to Aarhus.
