Peter Sagan came out of nowhere to claim his third consecutive World Championship title. The Slovakian burst out of the final turn, powered to the front and, in a perfectly executed bike throw, he snatched the victory in a photo finish over Alexander Kristoff (Norway), with Australia’s Michael Matthews third.
26 riders came together for the sprint after a crash at the foot of Salmon Hill and a subsequent flurry of attacks shattered the race but failed to distance the sprinters. Julian Alaphilippe (France) and Gianni Moscon (Italy) made up the most promising move but were reeled before the final 3km.
Christopher Juul Jensen (Denmark) put in a late move that was caught in the final 500 meters, setting up the bunch sprint. Italy led into the final turn for Matteo Trentin, but Kristoff was on his wheel and wound up his sprint early. Sagan, lurking not too far behind, turned on his speed and won by a few centimeters.
More to come.
