Dan McLay (Fortuneo-Vital Concept) has been taken to hospital following a crash at the end of the Trofeo Palma. McLay had just won the race when he collided with a photographer beyond the finish line.

After three days of dominance by the Belgian Lotto-Soudal team, the Mallorca Challenge held the concluding event on Sunday, the Trofeo Palma. With 160 kilometres over a comfortable course and under the sun, the event was set to end up with a sprint amongst a strong field of contenders featuring André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) or Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis).
Bora-Hansgrohe did most of the work to control and abort an unexpected attack by Movistar Team leaders Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana, protecting their fast man Matteo Pelucchi. The Italian sprinter did indeed raise his arms, seemingly the victor of a close contest with Bouhanni and McLay. Yet the photo-finish revealed shortly afterwards that it was the latter who had actually taken the victory.
McLay couldn’t claim the trophy, though, as he went on to crash into one of the photographers standing behind the finish line. The photographer hit his head against the floor, receiving several grazes. His equipment was completely shattered, and the cyclist did not appear to be much better.
The 25-year-old Briton rider seemed badly hurt at first, but a few seconds later he was able to stand on his feet, obviously shocked and his mouth visibly bleeding. He was immediately examined by a doctor who accompanied him to the surroundings of the podium, where he was greeted by rivals whose jerseys were stained by the blood on his hands.
In-situ checks revealed that McLay appeared to have harmed not only his lips and teeth, but also his jaw, and therefore was taken to hospital in order to get an x-ray and further evaluation. At the time of writing, no results of these tests had been released.
The podium ceremony was consequently held without McLay. His Fortunéo-Vital Concept teammates collected his trophy on his behalf, warmly applauded by the crowd, while Kévin Ledanois filled in the final podium picture, standing in the central position between Pelucchi and Bouhanni.
