Dan Martin took his first victory in the colours of Etixx-QuickStep Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana in Fredes. Martin darted away to win by two seconds over Jesus Herrada (Movistar) and Wout Poels (Team Sky).

The 29-year-old made his move inside the final kilometre, flying past José Herrada who had gone on the attack earlier in the climb. Martin built a very small advantage but it proved enough and he threw his arm up in celebration heading around the final corner. That allowed Poels to close the gap slightly in the final metres and he will keep the leader’s jersey going into stage 3.
