While women’s cycling is growing rapidly, the sport is still at the beginning of its journey towards widespread recognition and participation. As the professional peloton fights for parity, the amateur scene is developing in tandem.
The Crankettes, a new, vibrant women’s cycling team who in a short time have already made a big impact in the world of cycling, are in the vanguard of that movement. Over the coming months, BikeRadar will be following the progress of the Crankettes as they train and race, sharing tips, advice and experiences.
At 24 strong, the Crankettes are one of the largest amateur teams in the UK. They've gained significant recognition and sponsorship from cycling distributor Paligap and the Mickey Cranks bike shop in Witney, Oxfordshire from which the team's name comes. And in many ways, they're representative of the ongoing evolution of women’s cycling.
With a 44 percent increase in the number of women-only road races in the UK during 2013/14, there are increasing numbers of novices competing for the first time, and there are now established groups of amateur riders in the elite ranks. However, the intermediate ground where the transition from beginner to accomplished racer occurs has lacked recognition and support. That is, until now.
