Tour de France organisers rank climbs by difficulty on a scale from category 5 (easiest) to hors categorie (so tough they’re “beyond categorisation”). The 2016 race includes 28 ascents that come in at a category 2 or above. Here’s our guide to replicating five of them – no matter where you ride.
The Slope: Andorre Arcalis, Stage 9
The Stats: 10 kilometres; 7.2 percent average grade
Your Ride: This is one of the gentler, steadier climbs in the Pyrenees, so today it’s all about warming up slowly – the first few kilometres of the Arcalis are basically a false flat – and finding a comfortable rhythm. In the interest of authenticity (and bliss), pick a hill with a café at the summit; you’ve earned an espresso.
