Phil Gaimon (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Mara Abbott (LA Sweat) won stage 3 of the Redlands Bicycle Classic, and with that, each took over the yellow jersey in their respective races on Friday.
Gaimon won out of a 10-man group that came into the final three kilometers together after the larger field was peeled apart by the last trip up the Oak Glen Road hill, a major feature on the 15-mile Yucaipa circuit.
Midway through the men’s race, two riders were off the front, Travis Samuel (H&R Block) and Efren Flores (KHS-Maxxis). At one point, their gap was 1:40, but they were caught on the final lap, in part due to the efforts of the Silber team, which was riding for race leader Ryan Roth.
Inside of the final 10 kilometers, Adrien Costa (Cal Giant-Specialized) made a move but was unable to get away.
Gaimon rode clear to win ahead of teammate Michael Woods and Gavin Mannion (Jelly Belly), who were second and third, respectively. He now leads the overall by 31 seconds, ahead of Mannion. Costa is third, 38 seconds behind.
Abbott claims stage and overall lead
The women’s race featured a solo breakaway by Alizee Brien (Tibco). Her advantage pushed north of 1:30 at times, but she was caught before the final lap of racing.
Coming into the last trip up Oak Glen, the women’s peloton was whittled down considerably. Amber Neben (Visit Dallas-Noise) launched the first attack, and she was soon followed by Abbott, who countered, then rode away to win.
Neben hung on to finish second, and Allie Dragoo (Twenty16-Sho-Air) finished third.
Abbott holds the overall lead, 22 seconds ahead of Neben. Dragoo is third overall, 45 seconds back.
The Redlands Bicycle Classic stage race continues with Saturday’s stage 4 criterium, a 60-minute race for women, 90-minutes for men. Watch live coverage on VeloNews.com. The women’s race begins at 2:30 p.m. PDT; the men will race at 4:30 p.m. PDT.
