Well over 20,000 people have volunteered to help organise the Yorkshire Tour de France grand départ – but applicants are still being sought for stage 3, between Cambridge and London.
Entries to become one of 10,000 so-called Tour Makers closed at midnight yesterday. The Tour Makers will work with local authorities and the emergency services to organise and marshal the opening stages in Yorkshire on 5 and 6 July and South East England on 7 July.
Volunteers are still being sought for the 159km stage 3 between Cambridge and London. Volunteers can sign up via the Welcome to Yorkshire website before 20 January.
Meanwhile, North Yorkshire Police have cancelled all officers' and support staff holiday between 27 June and July 11 to help manage the hundreds of thousands of spectators expected to line the route, reports the Gazette and Herald .
