Traffic lights for cyclists installed at Bow roundabout in London

Low level traffic lights for cyclists began operating at Bow roundabout in London this morning to give commuter cyclists a safer head start at the lethal junction.

Transport for London said it now had plans to expand the continental-style lighting system to 11 other junctions across the capital if the measure proves successful at Bow.

TfL said the system – which repeats the early start signal of the principal lights at cyclists’ eye-level - had been through extensive off-road safety trials at the Transport Research Laboratory in Berkshire.

London’s mayor, Boris Johnson, said: "Innovative measures such as this are just one of a number of new safety initiatives we've been pushing for as part of my vision for cycling. We look forward to continuing to work with the government on many more measures to help make cycling even safer, more attractive and convenient for Londoners."

Three cyclists have been killed on or near Bow roundabout since November 2011.
