According to one study, 45% of those surveyed made New Year’s resolutions, while only 8% achieved them! I asked our readers to share their 2014 cycling-related goals with us, and I asked Coach John Hughes to provide some tips how best to reach your goals in 2014. First, using some of our readers’ goals as examples, Coach Hughes offers helpful psychological and training advice on goal-setting, tracking and goal-achievement. Following that are a selection of the goals readers shared. I think you’ll find the breadth and diversity of the goals quite interesting. Along with the Coach’s advice, they may inspire you to set some of your own this year – if you haven’t already. If you have, best of luck in achieving them! – J.M. | Ask Coach Fred Training & Nutrition Tips | | Fred Matheny | | Is 'Professional' Bike Fitting a Scam? Question: I've been fitted by three different bike shops using different fit systems. Each shop measured me on and off my bike, which they all agreed is too small for me. They also came to the same conclusion regarding my body: extra long legs and arms, very short torso. Even so, each system recommended different bike dimensions (top tube, seat tube, head tube, crankarm length, stem). I’m thinking about purchasing a super-cool new bike, but I want to make sure to get the right size this time. Is professional fitting a scam merely to make sure I’m unhappy with my old bike? -- April S. According to the trade publication Bicycle Retailer, “Rich designed the Hayes Stroker brake family and worked on Manitou products before giving up his industry job to get back to the simple life, managing a service department at a bike shop. “After seeing the difficulty that mechanics had mounting some tire/rim combinations, Travis brought in some bead slip from an auto tire shop, and his mechanics couldn’t stop raving about the stuff. “Word got around to other bike shops and pretty soon Travis was supplying other shops with the stuff and decided to get serious and develop packaging that worked for bike shops. He is now developing other service tools under the Uncle Dick’s brand.” Click to read the complete article on our website | | | Also in this Issue Our Regular Weekly Features News & Reviews: Fans Choose a 3-City Final Stage for the USA Pro Challenge • You Be the Judge: New Turn-Signal Cycling Gloves • Disc Brakes: A New Committee, and a Recall • Nuts to You!
