The Gloucester Grand Prix has long been a race that seems to define New England cyclo-cross. Held next to the ocean at Stage Fort Park, where over 1,000 racers compete on challenging courses, being treated to Fall foliage and getting to see how they stack up against some of Europe's finest racers.

It all began in October of 1999 on a bright, warm day with blustery winds. Two hundred and twenty-two racers competed, some against local favorite Tim Johnson who won the Elite Men's race, while Jen Dial Santoro won the women's event. Phenomenal growth ensued, and this year in excess of 1,000 racers are expected.

US champion Jeremy Powers (Aspire Racing), swept the weekend last year but was pushed hard by Cannondale teammates Curtis White and Stephen Hyde. Recently Powers has been battling to come back after suffering both an injury and illness during the past few weeks.

"I'm looking forward to bringing my best to start line on Saturday," he told Cyclingnews. "My injury did set me back a little but I've been working on coming back to 100 percent. Last weekend's second place (Charm City) was a nice step in the right direction."

"I love Gloucester- a true classic for us New Englander's, and the Fall weather it brings is always a highlight of my year," he added.
