Like 178 million other Americans, I and my fellow cold weather wimps in the South are dealing with this crazy “polar vortex” weather phenomenon that has thrown an insanely cold blanket over much of the country. Wind chills of 40+F below zero were common in much of the Midwest, which also has snow and other treachery to deal with. It seems like the perfect time to discuss one of the more perplexing issues all roadies face: What should I wear in certain temperatures and weather conditions? | | Ask Coach Fred Training & Nutrition Tips | | | Fred Matheny | | Are 1980s-era Winter Training Guidelines Still Valid? Question: I have been following your articles and advice since the 1980s. My question to you is based on an article you wrote for the December 1986 edition of Bicycling magazine. I have been using those workouts for Winter training since that time and it has always worked out well for me. The information you gave back then was based on heart rate based on the popular 220 - age = maximum heart rate formula, then percentages of that based on the maximum heart rate. It seems to me nowadays that this formula is antiquated. Everyone seems to be basing power on watt meters and the like. My question to you: Is the information from the 1980s still good to use, or is this not accurate enough based on what has evolved in the past 27 years? – Karl S. A Longtime Goal Achieved Last week, with the new year’s first Newsletter, we offered up some of Coach John Hughes’ best goal-setting and achieving tips and a nice selection of your goals. I enjoyed them because I’m goal-minded and know that for me, having goals is the secret to getting the most out of my cycling. Coincidentally, just days before last week’s Newsletter, on December 24, 2013, I finally wrapped up my biggest cycling goal ever. I want to tell you about it. Maybe it’ll motivate you. Maybe you’ll think I’m nuts.
