Young Italian sprinter Jakub Mareczko (Southeast) won the third stage of Coppi e Bartali in Crevalcore, beating Mattia Gavazzi (Amore e Vita), Ioannis Tamourridis (Synergy Baku Cycling Project) and Francesco Chicchi (Androni Giocattoli) in a high-speed dash to the line.
The break of the day was caught just four kilometres from the finish of the 158km stage. Christina Jewelry led out the sprint but Mareczko had the better sprint and hit out early to take his third victory of the 2016 season.
The stage was always expected to be dominated by the sprinters and their teams but a group of adventurers got away after 44km to form the break of the day.
Adam de Vos (Rally Cycling) was one of the first to get a gap and he was joined by Liam Holohan (Team Wiggins), Fabio Tommassini (D'Amico - Bottecchia), Nicola Gaffurini (Norda Mg.Kvis), Francisco Mancebo (SkyDive Dubai), Jon Bozic (Adria Mobil) and Andriy Vasylyuk (Kolss - Bdc Team).
They opened a lead of 3:50 as the riders began seven laps of 12km around Crevalcore not far from Bologna but the peloton gradually chipped away at their lead, with the Italian national team doing a lot of the work. It was down to 1:30 with four laps to go, just 40 seconds with two laps to go and they were finally reeled in with four kilometres the finish.
Individual pursuit world champion Filippo Ganna is part of the Italian team and did a big part of the work bringing the break under control. The Danish-based Christina Jewelry team took over in the final two kilometres but Mareczko used his ever-improving sprinting skills to stay near the front and then hit out in sight of the finish on the long straight road.
