After Levi's found success with its Commuter line, other companies started getting into the riding jeans game. Club Ride was among them, and the Cog jeans are its latest offering.
The Cog jeans are made from two-way stretch 12oz denim with a little Lycra. They are comfortable, durable and cycling-smart. You might well ask what makes a pair of jeans 'cycling jeans'? There's a few things: a gusset crotch, reflective elements and a cut that works on the bike as well as off.
A gusset crotch simply means that a triangular piece of material is used at the high-friction junction, so you sit on flat material, not right on a seam. This improves comfort and means the trousers last longer. We tried had other Lycra-infused jeans, such as those from Joe's, which are often very soft and stretchy, but the crotch blows out within a couple months of riding.
We appreciate how the Cog jeans function well on the bike, but don't scream 'cycling-specific' when you're off it. In the company's trademark casual style, the taller rear waist is dubbed 'NoCrackBack', and the cut does function as advertised when on the bike. Articulated knees and the gentle stretch of the material team up to create an easy feel while riding. Reflective details on the belt loop, side pocket and right leg really 'pop' at night.
We also appreciated the side mobile phone pocket. With smartphones getting ever larger, riding a bike or even sitting in a chair with one in the standard front pocket isn't that comfortable, and the phone is not that easily accessible either.
The zippered phone pocket is built into the side seam. It's not too obvious and holds the weight of a phone without feeling awkward
The straight fit keeps the pant cuffs out of your chain, but we would appreciate just a bit more of a taper to stop the cuffs flapping against the cranks when the wind is howling. One other nit to pick: the contrasting red stitching around the button hole started to fray after about a month of near-daily use. But that brings us to the bottom line: we have been wearing these jeans nearly every day for nearly two months.
