With more mountains, fewer time trials, and yes, cobblestones, the 2014 Tour de France promises to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. Here’s a look at 10 can’t-miss stages. —Joe Lindsey and Whit Yost

Stage 2: York to Sheffield, July 6, 198km

Last year, the Tour de France began with three exciting road stages on the island of Corsica. This year, the 101st edition of the Tour starts in England with three road stages that wind south from Yorkshire to London. Stage 1’s flat profile means a sprinter will likely take the Tour’s first yellow jersey, but Stage 2 offers more challenge, with an undulating route that has several uncategorised ascents and miles of narrow, winding roads. The steep climb up Jenkin Road comes less than 5 kilometres from the finish and should provide the perfect launch pad for aggressive riders like Simon Gerrans and Philippe Gilbert. And if a large but select group hits the line together, look for Peter Sagan to take his first win of the 2014 Tour.
