Editor’s Note:  I apologize for your having to enter an annoying code to log in to our site. We’ve been the target of “spambots” – hackers’ automated attempts to take down our site, just for the hell of it – for over a week. It’s a sad statement about the Internet, and it’s been incredibly frustrating and time-consuming on our end.

We’re working with our web hosting company to address the situation, and one way to do that is to ensure that real live human beings are logging in. It’s a pain in the butt, to be sure (I speak from experience; I have to log in the same way). And some of you may have trouble logging in because of your email’s domain name; if you do, please reply to today’s email to let me know, and we’ll get it white-listed.

Again, I’m really sorry that this is happening. My thanks to you for hanging in there with us as we work to deal with this. -- John

What's Causing Tender Skin in a "Touchy" Spot?

Question: I have been cycling fairly seriously for about 15 years, although there was a stretch of several years battling insomnia where I didn't ride much. I have been back riding more consistently for the last 2 years and now weight about 25 pounds more; I can’t seem to lose this extra weight. Since coming back, I have had trouble with the skin around the top of my inner thigh. It feels like this skin is being stretched in some way. I commute often in the 20- to 30-mile range. After a recent ride, I removed my shorts there was some blood on the chamois. It is not split wide open, but there are some small areas that I can see small dots of blood. I've tried using Bag Balm and wearing different brands of shorts, but nothing so far seems to have made a difference. I would appreciate any insights you can share. -- Anonymous

The RBR eBookstore -- Now Over 100 Titles!

On Sale Now! Cycling "Past 50" Series Bundle. In this 4-article series Coach John Hughes shares what you need to do as you age into your 50s and beyond – using cycling and other exercises – to increase your longevity and improve your enjoyment of life! These article apply whether you are just taking up cycling and exercise or you’ve been a cyclist for years and intend never to stop. Each one of these eArticles is terrific on its own merits; together, they make an indispensible 95-page set. In short, it’s a thoroughly researched, imminently useful and beneficial knowledge base.

In Cycling in the Heat, Part 2: Hydration Management, Coach John Hughes cuts through the confusion to help us understand that the science of hydration and electrolyte replacement is changing. The old advice is no longer valid. He stresses the importance of optimal hydration, finding the right balance between drinking too little and drinking too much, and also getting the specific electrolytes your body needs. In the article, he presents the latest scientific evidence and his recommendations for best managing your hydration. In the excellent new 21-page article, Coach Hughes teaches you how to develop your personal hydration plan.

In Pedal Off the Pounds, USA Cycling Level 1 Coach David Ertl eschews diet book gimmickry for the hard truth, detailed nutritional and dietary knowledge, and a proven approach to weight loss for cyclists – whether weight loss alone is your goal, or whether losing weight and simultaneously training to improve cycling performance is your goal. When you combine a reduced-calorie diet with increased energy expenditure, weight loss becomes manageable and noticeable. And cycling is the ideal calorie-burning activity. Coach Ertl provides sample eating and workout plans in his 34-page eBook.

Interbike 2013 Redux

John Marsh and I wrapped up our 2-part coverage of the Interbike Bicycle Show (Sept. 16-20 in Las Vegas) a couple of weeks ago. There’s simply no way for even two people to see everything at this mega-show, so every year I bring back a pile of catalogs and notes and try to get through them in a timely manner.

Well, I just finished this exercise, and feel like I missed the boat (or perhaps I should say “bicycle”), because there were a few products that I wish I had told you about earlier. I’m going to try to make up for that today.

Product News
In my previous Interbike stories I mentioned the Kickr trainer, which is the type that takes the place of your rear wheel. This saves your tire and cassette, means you don’t need a riser block for the front wheel, and seems to result in a more compact trainer, too.
