Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) won his third consecutive sprint Thursday during stage 3 at the Colombia Oro y Paz, consolidating his overall lead. Matteo Malucelli (Androni - Sidermec) was second, followed by Juan Sebastian Molano (Manzana Postobon), the Italian and Colombian swapping podium places from the previous day's result.

UnitedHealthcare briefly took control of the peloton in the closing kilometres after the breakaway was caught and a late crash took down about half a dozen riders, but Gaviria's Quick-Step squad once again proved the fastest as they seized the front of the peloton just before the sweeping right corner in the final kilometre.

Quick-Step emerged from the turn with Gaviria sitting third wheel as first Álvaro Hodeg pulled off and then Max Richeze dropped off the sprinter with 100 metres to go. Gaviria easily took care of business from there.

A breakaway of five riders animated most of the day. In the group were Mauro Richeze (Virgen de Fatima), Felix Alejandro Baron (Illuminate), Dalivier Ospina (Coldeportes-Claro), Rafael Montiel (Orgullo Paisa) and Brayan Steven Ramirez (Colombia).

The breakaway split up with less than 20km to go, with Baron riding on alone while Quick-Step, Androni and Team Sky led the chase behind. The peloton swept up the Team Illuminate rider with 15km to go and then weathered a flurry of brief attacks as opportunists looked to catch the bunch off-guard.
