Shimano’s simple but effective MW81 boots are a comfy and cosy option for clipless winter cruising.
Rather than using fancy dial closures, Shimano have sensibly stuck with three broad velcro straps and a wraparound neoprene top collar. That means there's nothing to seize with mud, break or pop open if you clout a rock and a lighter (1,100g for a pair of slightly muddy 44s) weight than most shoes.
You can’t do them up as tight as you could with a dial though, and the medium stiffness of the sole means they feel relaxed and comfy rather than racey, but that’s a welcome relief in terms of sustained circulation and comfort.
They’re cosy down to freezing point and the Gore-Tex lining is waterproof for as long as you can stop water coming in the top, which is as much as you can really expect. They dry quickly, grip okay when you're walking and last well too.
