Boonen fastest in stage 4 sprint in Qatar

MESAIEED, Qatar (AFP) — Tom Boonen boosted his prospects of a finding the overall in the Tour of Qatar by claiming Wednesday’s fourth and penultimate stage.

The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider, who also took Monday’s second stage, moved up from fourth to second, 17 seconds adrift, behind teammate Niki Terpstra in the overall standings with only Thursday’s fifth and final stage remaining.

Boonen was finished in the sprint to close the 135-kilometer leg from Dukhan to Mesaeeid, beating André Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) and Barry Markus (Belkin).

This was the 33-year-old Boonen’s 22nd stage win in Qatar where he has taken the title in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2012.
