Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) won stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya in Valls, using his fast finish to beat Darryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) and Jay McCarthy (Bora-Hansgrohe) after surviving the late Coll de Lilla climb and a series of tight turns.
McCarthy looked set to win but Valverde came from behind to snatch victory on the line. Stage 1 winner Alvaro Hodeg (Quick-Step Floors) was distanced on the climb and so Valverde also took the race lead thanks to time bonuses.
Thursday’s third stage sees the first mountain stage of this year’s Volta a Catalunya, with a finish at the Valter 2000 ski resort.
