Peter Sagan won stage 1 of the Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde Tuesday in Zottegem, Belgium. Sagan initiated a late escape and, despite touching the brakes in the sprint, took victory in the 201-kilometer opener for the three-day stage race.
Sagan’s teammate, Oscar Gatto, was second and Kenneth Van Bilsen (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise) was third.
It appeared as though Sagan, winner of last Friday’s E3 Harelbeke classic, tried to slow himself at the line and give Gatto the victory, but the Italian finished just behind his team captain.
Three Days of De Panne continues Tuesday with the 206km second stage, from Zottegem to Koksijde.
