I think you know I’m a strong advocate when it comes to promoting cycling safety – in terms of supporting cycling advocacy organizations, protecting our rights and responsibilities on the road, and riding smartly and safely to avoid accidents and injuries. So, from time to time, I’ll let out my inner Reverend John on topics like those. Today, though, I’m going to preach a bit on a related topic – taking care of yourself (and your health) off the bike. I got an email over the weekend from an RBR Premium Member with whom I correspond now and again. He wrote to tell me he had recently been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Jim provided prompt, friendly answers to my questions about chain skipping and I'll try out his suggestions this weekend. I’m sharing them this week to keep the freehub love going. To recap, the freehub (also called the freewheel or drive mechanism), is that all-important gizmo deep inside a bicycle rear wheel that magically lets you stomp on the pedals and go, while letting you stop spinning and coast at any time, too. An RBR reader named Gary in Phoenix, Arizona, sent an email saying that in his opinion, this mechanism could be considered among the most important inventions in cycling. It’s a good thought.
