Darwin Atapuma (BMC Racing) is recovering with knife wounds after being attacked by two men while on a training ride.

The Colombian is now resting in his hometown of Túquerres with cuts to his left hand and wrist after he struggled with the two suspects, one of whom was armed. The men, who were trying to steal Atapuma’s bike, were later arrested by police, according to a BMC press release.

“It was a stressful event and I was lucky the police were able to get the two guys,” Atapuma told BMC’s chief medical officer Dr. Max Testa.

Testa said Atapuma, who won a stage at the 2013 Tour of Poland, has a protective cast on his arm and is limited to indoor riding for the next 10 days as his injuries heal.

The 26-year-old’s 2015 racing schedule will not be impacted, according to the release. He is slated to start his season at the Tour Méditerranéen, which was originally penciled in for February 12-15. The race, however, may be canceled over unpaid fees, according to Sports Business Daily .

Atapuma will travel to Europe with his teammates in a few weeks for a training camp in Spain.

“Darwin is in good spirits, but a little disappointed because the training was going well,” Testa said. “The day before he was attacked, he did a five-hour mountain bike ride.”

Atapuma turned professional in 2009 and rode for two Colombian teams before joining BMC for the 2014 season.
