We’ve not had a single issue with these test hoops from Spank in eight months of almost daily use, while other, considerably more expensive wheels have already run into problems.
We had a slight fight getting our WTB tyres over the central ‘Oobah’ bulge that Spank attribute their impressive strength and stiffness to, but once on they blew up tubeless straight away and the 25mm inner width gives even 2.2in rubber a fat, well supported profile.
The rim design and three-cross lacing give a stiff but not too harsh feel that compares well with budget carbon wheels. Despite the broad rims, overall weight is a reasonably responsive 1,830g and the Japanese bearings are still spinning sweetly. The CNC machined hubs take 15mm and 142x12mm axles as standard, with adaptors included.
The ‘Bead Bite’ serrations on the rim bed and inner sidewall mean we’ve not burped tyres once, despite running low pressures. We have had some issues with a 650b set of Bead Bite rims though, so, like with any rims, be wary if initial tyre fit is baggy.
