Last Sunday, as I sat in church listening to the choir’s annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah,” I couldn’t help but notice the face of the soprano soloist – not as she sang, but as she listened to the orchestra play. If you’ve ever seen a classical artist (think Yo-Yo Ma or Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg) performing a solo, you’ve seen that face. It’s an expression of deep, soul-touching, life-affirming appreciation and pleasure. It’s the face of rapture -- the face of pure joy. It’s a similar story but designed to help procrastinators who waited too late to order cycling gifts in time to receive them before the big day. It’s also designed to help local bicycle shops that need your Christmas dollars. I don’t think most people realize that things have changed drastically since the ’60s and ’70s. Back then lots of people thought bicycles were the ultimate present for under the tree and went to their LBS to buy them. Sadly, for many reasons, today, so few Christmas shoppers get their gifts at bike shops and so few buy bicycles there, that it’s barely a blip on their radar. And because the holidays also kick off the long, even slower winter season for many shops, it can be a time of cutting back and laying off employees as a result.
