Shimano has teased a potential new component line on its stand at the Eurobike trade show. Currently in a concept stage, the Metrea components are designed for use on urban bikes and feature futuristic yet familiar styling.
Hybrids and other urban bikes at a mid to high price point tend to use road, though sometimes also mountain bike transmission components – something we think Shimano might be aiming to change.
Fitted to a display bike was a Metrea branded 1x11 transmission complete with an unusual shift/brake lever for use will bullhorn bars and a pair of dedicated, flat-mount hydraulic disc brakes.
The crankset looks familiar to anyone aware of Shimano’s latest generation components and both single and double ring versions exist. Look closer and you’ll notice an integrated chain guard – useful for keeping an oily chain away from clothing.
The shifter itself is a particularly unusual component – looking almost like a mechanical version of Shimano’s ST-9071 Di2 shifter from the world of time trialling.
