Pauline Ferrand-Prevot out-fights Sanne Cant for women’s crown
Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of France won a thriller of a battle at the UCI Cyclocross World Championships on Saturday in the Czech Republic, adding the world ‘cross crown to her rainbow jersey from the 2014 road championships in Spain.
Ferrand-Prevot and Sanne Cant (Belgium) were trading punches throughout the final laps, but it was the French rider who delivered the knockout in the end, with Marianne Vos (Netherlands) rounding out the podium in third.
Lucie Chainel-Lefevre (France) got off to a quick start on the muddy circuit as Vos led the pursuit.
As the first lap came to an end Chainel-Lefevre led through the finish with Vos, Cant and Ferrand-Prevot chasing. Americans Katie Antonneau and Katie Compton were already a half-minute down with the snow starting to fall.
The French teammates hooked up just past the barriers with Vos just behind in third.
Then Cant slipped past Vos and into third.
Three laps to go saw a five-woman group up front, with Cant, Vos and Harris having joined the French party. Katerina Nash soon latched on, too.
Ferrand-Prevot and Cant soon escaped the group, and then the French rider discarded Cant, and with two to go she was leading the race alone with Nash in front of a four-woman battle for second containing Vos, Cant and Harris.
Cant surged again and left the others behind, quickly closing on Ferrand-Prevot, and the two were together after pitting for fresh bikes. Vos was perhaps five seconds behind, with Wyman trying to work her way into contention.
Cant opened a gap on Ferrand-Prevot, but the French rider fought back, only to bobble on a short rise and see her Belgian rival ride away again, taking a three-second edge.
Going into the bell lap Cant was just two seconds ahead of Ferrand-Prevot with Vos leading the charge at seven seconds down. And then the French rider retook the lead, with Vos closing in, followed by Nash and Harris.
At the stairs Cant was leading Ferrand-Prevot once again, but the chase was nearly on them. Vos pitted, but Nash did not, and at the barriers it was Ferrand-Prevot leading Cant, chased by Vos, Nash and Harris.
The two front-runners battled hand to hand, neither giving quarter, as Nash and Vos fought for third. The Czech rider slid out on a muddy patch, giving the edge to Vos, as ahead Ferrand-Prevot took a slight advantage over Cant.
The French rider led onto the pavement and would not be denied — she took the victory over Cant, while Vos had to settle for third at 15 seconds.
Antonneau was the top American in 13th at 2:30 with Rachel Lloyd 20th at 3:14.

In the News: Armstrong says ex-dopers should talk to CIRC
Speaking to BBC Sport, Lance Armstrong said that UCI president Brian Cookson should force the likes of Astana’s Alexandre Vinokourov, Tinkoff-Saxo’s Bjarne Riis, and other controversial team managers still in the sport, to cooperate with the Cycling Independent Reform Commission (CIRC).
“If I’m Brian Cookson, I would make it a deal point that you have to come in and talk,” he said. “So if Riis doesn’t talk to you, or Vinokourov doesn’t, there should be consequences. I don’t know those to be examples, but I can imagine.
“If you don’t come in to talk, you don’t just get passed.”
When asked for a reaction, Riis’ team Tinkoff-Saxo said he has never refused to meet CIRC, and it wanted to respect the confidentiality of the process. The UCI said it would wait until CIRC’s report is finished before commenting. Armstrong has testified before the panel.

Kevin Pauwels, Sanne Cant claim UCI World Cup titles
Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Napoleon Games) and Sanne Cant (Enertherm-BKCP) claimed their UCI cyclocross World Cup titles on Sunday following the final race at Hoogerheide.
Mathieu Van der Poel (BKCP-PowerPlus) won the men’s finale in the Netherlands, bolting away from the field on the first lap and staying away to the finish. Wout Van Aert (Vastgoedservice-Golden Palace) took second with Gianni Vermeersch (Sunweb) third.
Pauwels, who finished fourth, collected the overall title with 430 points. Lars Van der Haar (Giant-Alpecin) finished second overall with 345 while Corne Van Kessel (Telenet-Fidea) took third with 307.
Eva Lechner (Colnago Sudtirol) took the women’s closer ahead of Katerina Nash (Luna) and Pauline Ferrand Prevot (Rabo-Liv).
Cant, like Pauwels, finished fourth to lock up the series title with 246 points. Ellen Van Loy (Telenet-Fidea( finished second with 204 and Katie Compton (Trek Factory Racing) finished third with 187.
Fast and faster
Tom Meeusen (Telenet-Fidea) bolted off the front of the men’s field from the gun, chased by Pauwels and Van der Poel. Then Van der Poel took over at the front and almost instantly opened a seven-second gap on the muddy circuit. In short order he was completely out of sight.
As the first lap ended Van der Poel was already 15 seconds ahead of a chase featuring Sunweb teammates Pauwels and Tim Merlier. A lap later, Vermeersch had moved into second, 24 seconds down on the leader.
With six to go Van der Poel led Vermeersch by 33 seconds as Van Aert fronted a bigger chase a minute down.
Van Aert got away from that group during the lap and took over sole possession of third, pursued by Pauwels. The World Cup leader caught on, and with a half hour gone and five laps remaining Van der Poel remained alone out front, despite a bobble. Vermeersch was losing ground at 43 seconds while Van Aert and Pauwels were at 1:04.
Sven Nys (Crelan-AA Drink), Van der Haar and Francis Mourey (FDJ) linked up with Van Aert and Pauwels, adding horsepower to the chase until Pauwels dumped it in a corner and briefly sprung Van der Haar free.
The race for second
With four to go Van der Poel was nearly a minute ahead of Vermeersch, with the second chase a further half-minute in arrears, having retrieved Van der Haar.
A lap later, Vermeersch was clinging to second at 1:08 with a resurgent Van Aert closing in some 10 seconds behind.
Van der Poel dropped his chain and had to dismount to fix it, but he had plenty of time to effect repairs. Behind, Pauwels had bridged to the Van Aert-Vermeersch chase.
Two to go saw Van der Poel still on his own, with the chasing trio battling for second at 1:18.
Come bell lap the pursuit remained a race for second with Van Aert on the front and Pauwels bringing up the rear. Then Van Aert accelerated away from the others and took over the runner-up spot, leaving Vermeersch and Pauwels to fight for third.
Van der Poel grabbed a Dutch banner at the line and celebrated his victory before the home crowd with a flag wave and a fist pump. Van Aert followed at 1:04 for second, while Vermeersch coasted across ahead of Pauwels for third at 1:21.

Deja vu: Malori wins Tour de San Luis time trial
Italian Adriano Malori (Movistar) won Friday’s individual time trial at the Tour de San Luis — a repeat win for the 26-year-old, who won the same stage in the Argentine race’s 2014 edition.
The 17.4km time trial was held in sweltering conditions — nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit at the start in San Luis.
With only about 360 feet of climbing, almost entirely in the second half of the out-and-back course, it was a stage that favored time trial specialists.
Early on in the day, David Williams (Jamis-Hagens Berman) set a best time of 21:10.10. Serghei Tvetcov (Androni-Giocattoli) soon unseated the American with a time of 20:36.40.
Canadian Hugo Houle (Ag2r-La Mondiale) was next in the hot seat, but then, last year’s winner of the Tour de San Luis time trial, Adriano Malori (Movistar) came in with a blistering time, besting Houle by five seconds.
Etixx-Quick-Step’s Michal Kwiatkowski, the Polish national TT champ, was next to crack the top three, stopping the clock four seconds shy of Malori’s time, good for second place.
After finishing, Malori noted that the wind was a significant factor in the final half of the race.
The overall race leader, Daniel Diaz (Funvic), stopped the clock at 20:49.89, finishing two seconds ahead of Nairo Quintana (Movistar), who started the day in fourth place overall. Rodolfo Torres (Team Colombia), second place overall, also ceded time on GC, finishing the individual effort in 20:58.13.
Alex Diniz (Funvic), who was sitting in third place overall, was forced to abandon on Friday, due to gastric problems. This moved Quintana into third place on GC, behind Diaz and Torres.
Malori held on to win stage 5, followed by Kwiatkowski in second and Houle, third.
Saturday’s stage 6 will subject the peloton to another major summit finish, riding 117.5km from Achiras to Filo Sierras Comechingones, a 4,167-foot climb averaging 7.8 percent.
