Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) snatched overall victory at the Ruta del Sol from Tejay van Garderen (BMC) with an all-in, solo attack seven kilometres from the finish atop the Alto Penas Blancas climb.
Valverde started the stage 22 seconds down on the American but finished 48 seconds ahead to win the stage and take overall success.
Van Garderen made a strong late chase but failed to pull back enough time. He eventually cracked after his huge effort and Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) atackedchim to take second on the stage, 25 seconds behind Valverde. He gained enough time to secure third place overall at 52 seconds. Van Garderen managed to hang to second overall, finishing 26 seconds down on the veteran Spaniard.
Wilco Kelderman (LottoNL-Jumbo) was fourth overall at 55 seconds, with Rafa Majka (Tinkoff) fifth at 1:11.
