Cyclocross is again upon us, and the 2015-16 season brings with it a bounty of disc-brake-equipped machines. As with any type of bike, the sky is the limit for what you can spend, but here we focus on machines around the £2,500 mark (though a couple of the best-value rides here are considerably cheaper). At this price point, you can generally get a carbon frame, a Shimano 105 or SRAM Rival group, hydraulic disc brakes and decent wheels.

Not wanting to mess with a good thing, Specialized kept its tweaks to the CruX to a minimum for this season. The most significant change to what the company calls its off-road Tarmac is the addition of front and rear thru-axles.
The Elite X1 we’re testing has a full carbon frame and comes with SRAM’s second-tier 1x road group, aptly named X1. The X1 group combines a 40t chainring with a wide-ranging 11-32t 11-speed cassette.
Other component highlights include 700x33mm Specialized Terra Pro tubeless-ready clinchers, Axis 4.0 Disc SCS wheels and Specialized house-brand alloy cockpit components.
