Redesigning the highly acclaimed Impact flat pedal shoes was a big risk and entailed a lot of hard work, but fortunately for Five Ten all that effort has paid off. The new Impact VXis are far slimmer, less clumpy and much lighter than their predecessors, weighing in at an impressive 740g for the pair (size 42).
The narrower profile ensures better crank clearance when pedalling and makes foot placement less critical when you’re scrabbling to get back onto the pedals after dabbing too. Don’t be fooled though – there’s still plenty of space inside for those with wide feet.
When it comes to grip, the Impact VXis simply operate on another level to anything else we’ve tried. The dotty-patterned Stealth Mi6 rubber sole offers an almost clipped-in feel – something not everyone will appreciate – and off the bike the shoes will stick to wet rocks and roots should you need to walk back up the hill. They’re relatively stiff too, which, combined with the impressive comfort and low weight, makes them great for long trail rides. The new upper shrugs off splashes and the odd rain shower too, though a prolonged soaking can still lead to the shoes taking on water.
