Vincenzo Nibali was the surprise winner of the second stage of the Tour de France in Sheffield after jumping from the group of favourites with 2km to go.
The Italian champion also took over the race lead, as he finished the stage ahead of Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) and Michal Kwiatkowski (OPQS).
Nibali moved in to the yellow jersey of the overall leader, as previous leader Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano) was - as expected - unable to survive the day’s nine climbs. Peter Sagan (Cannondale), who had hoped to be in yellow himself, is second in the general classification and Van Avermaet is third, both at two seconds down.
