Marcel Kittel (Giant-Shimano) won the sprint of the first stage of the Tour de France to take the first yellow jersey of the 2014 race. He outsprinted Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and Ramunus Navardauskus (Garmin-Sharp). The finish was marred by crash near the line which involved Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).
It was the second consecutive stage 1 Tour win for German sprinter Kittel. The man of the day, however, was veteran Jens Voigt (Trek), who outfoxed two break companions and went on a solo flight of more than 50km, giving him the points jersey as King of the Mountains before he was caught.
