Armstrong claims Bruyneel, Carmichael, Weisel knew about his doping — USA Today
During testimony for the lawsuit brought against him by Acceptance Insurance Company last November, Lance Armstrong revealed names related to his doping practices to investigators.
Johan Bruyneel, Armstrong’s sport director throughout his career, played a key role in the rider’s use of performance-enhancing drugs and blood-doping. According to the testimony, “Bruyneel participated in or assisted with Armstrong’s use of PEDs, and knew of that use through their conversations and acts.”
As for where he got the drugs, Armstrong said trainer Pepe Marti, Dr. Pedro Celaya, Dr. Luis del Moral, and Dr. Michele Ferrari all provided him with testosterone and EPO, and/or assisted with blood transfusions to bolster the oxygen levels in his blood. Several people, including former U.S. Postal team soigneur Emma O’Reilly, delivered Armstrong drugs and supplies during his career than spanned from 1995-2010 — although he did not compete in 1997 and from 2006-2008, and claimed he did not violate anti-doping rules in 2009 and 2010.
Armstrong also told investigators that Thomas Weisel — a financial backer of Tailwind Sports, the company that managed the U.S. Postal Service team — was aware of doping on the squad. Weisel has long denied having any knowledge of illegal drug use on the team.
Team general manager Mark Gorski, along with Armstrong’s coach and former pro Chris Carmichael, were also aware of Armstrong’s use of PEDs, according to a copy of the testimony that was released Wednesday.
