Ochowicz: No slacking off at BMC in 2018

When analysing the 2017 season, Jim Ochowicz and his BMC management team can look back at a relatively successful campaign. Greg Van Avermaet became a legitimate Classics star with a hugely impressive spring; Richie Porte lit up a number of early season stage races; Dylan Teuns enjoyed breakthrough second half of the year, and Grand Tour stages were won in both the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España.

The US-registered team may have come up short in the Grand Tour GC department; missed out on the WorldTour team rankings and slipped to silver at the Worlds TTT but Ochowicz believes that the team can step up in 2018, and deliver further success.

Perhaps the biggest challenge for Ochowicz during the winter is over how he deals with the team's Grand Tour hopes.

Richie Porte, Tejay van Garderen and Rohan Dennis all missed out on their ambitions to contend for podium spots, although van Garderen did at least rescue his season, and perhaps his career, with a stage at the Giro and 10th overall at the Vuelta.

While Porte will have another shot at Tour de France glory in 2018, the roles of Dennis and van Garderen remain uncertain. Dennis has proven his undoubted talent as a bike rider during his time at the team but he has only made it to the finish of two Grand Tours, and only once finished inside the top 90, when he took 81st at the 2014 Vuelta. Van Garderen remains somewhat of a stage racing enigma – always liable to crack but still with two top-fives at the Tour on his palmares.

"Our intention is that Tejay steps up," Ochowicz told Cyclingnews from his European office in Belgium.

Six Day London: Madison victory elevates Cavendish and Kennaugh into overall contention

After three nights of the London Six Day, Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh are in contention for the overall victory following their madison win. The Manx duo are ahead of leader's Callum Scotson and Cam Meyer on points (218 to 216 points) in fourth place but find themselves a lap down at the half-way mark.

Kenny De Ketele and Moreno De Pauw of Belgium (235 points), and Alberto Torres and Sebastien Mora Vedri (230 points) of Spain also lead the Australian's on points but are a lap down. At the busy top end of the standings, Yoeri Havik and Roy Pieters of Netherlands are second with 208 points an equal on laps.

Speaking after racing had wrapped up, the experienced track rider Cavendish admitted that he and Kennaugh are not yet talking of winning the overall despite their position.

"It's difficult to try and win here with the best Madison and Six Day riders," said Cavendish, who was second with Bradley Wiggins as his partner last year. "It's Pete's first Six Day so we can't really think about the overall we just have to think about trying to win what we want to win."

Although Kennaugh is adapting to the Six Day racing, the 28-year-old won team pursuit gold on the same velodrome at the 2012 Olympic Games and comes from a track background.

"Pete was great today, he really gritted his teeth in that last race and that's what you need to be a Six Day rider," Cavendish added of his teammate who he also rode alongside at Team Sky.

2018 Tour of Flanders and Commonwealth Games early-season goals for Elvin

In November of 2016, Gracie Elvin outlined her goal to win the 2017 Tour of Flanders. In April, she came within a wheel length of winning the race. In 2018, the Tour of Flanders will again be the primary goal for the Australian on Orica-Scott. However, the 28-year-old is also aiming for the Commonwealth Games road race just two-weeks later on the Gold Coast, Brisbane.

"It is always going to be a focus for me," Elvin Cyclingnews of her Flanders focus on the start line of the women's Tour of Guangxi. "My heart lies in that part of the world for racing and I am just going to keep trying to win it until I retire. I have to be so happy with second this year. That was a bit of a dream day but unfortunately it wasn't a win but if my 12-year-old self knew that was going to happen, I would have been thrilled.

"Next year it is going to be a focus, especially because it is two weeks before the Commonwealth Games in Australia. I am going to be really fit for that too. That period of racing is going to be really important for me."

Having hit her goals and nailed the process to ensure she arrived at Flanders in peak form, Elvin faces the challenge of earning selection for the Gold Coast games in the early-season while remaining focused for Belgium. Elvin could also add the Ardennes into the mix to ensure a packed start to the season.

"It is going to be a challenge, so I am working on a good plan now," she said. "Especially because we are probably going to have to focus a little more on the January racing as well. All the Aussies are going to be vying for those spots at the Commonwealth Games and nationals, cadels race, TDU … they are all going to be as important as the races in the spring in Europe.

"I am going to have to plan it carefully and then plan the travel around that carefully as well. I might have to jump straight back on a plane if I do go to the Commonwealth Games back for the Ardennes races so it going to be a few full-on weeks."
