Ewan and Hayman in Orica-GreenEdge's Tour de Luxembourg squad

Orica-GreenEdge have named a seven-rider squad for the 2.HC Tour de Luxembourg with the aim of delivering Caleb Ewan to stage win success. The 21-year-old will be backed by a strong sprint train with Paris-Roubaix winner Mat Hayman as the road captain.

"Predominantly we will be targeting stage wins with Caleb Ewan," sport director Matt Wilson said of the team goals. "He gained a lot of valuable experience recently racing at the Giro d'Italia and we've got a really strong group of guys heading to Luxembourg to support him."

Ewan made his Giro debut this month, recording four top-ten results before withdrawing from the race after stage 12 when he finished runner up to Andre Greipel in Bibione.

While the team is aiming for stage wins with Ewan, Chris Juul-Jensen will have freedom to pursue his personal ambitions for a good general classification.

"As far as the general classification goes we have Danish rider Chris Juul-Jensen. I think he can go pretty well here, it will all depends on how hard the climbs are in this area," added Wilson.

Luke Durbridge, who hasn't raced since the Amstel Gold Race in April, explained he is looking forward to pinning on a number and making his first appearance in Luxembourg.

Ryan Roth wins Winston-Salem Classic

Ryan Roth (Silber) took a hard fought win in punishingly hot and humid conditions on the final day of a week-long festival of racing in Winston-Salem.

Roth won by a wheel over Eric Marcotte (Jamis), and Evan Huffman (Rally Cycling) from a five-man escape.

"The team has been super consistent all year," Roth said at the finish. "But we haven’t had a proper cross-the-line-first win, so that’s what we were shooting for."

The 14-lap race was dominated by a 10-man breakaway that escaped early, containing Marco Canola (UnitedHealthcare), Tom Soladay (Rally Cycling), Benjamin Perry (Silber), Orlando Garibay (Cylance-InCycle), Michael Sheehan (Jelly Belly), Chris Horner (Lupus), Jon Hornbeck and Andzs Flaksis (Holowesko-Citadel), Bruno Langlois (Garneau-Quebecor), Dan Craven (Cycling Academy Team).

The gap was kept in check almost single-handedly by Amore & Vita, but when it got close, attacks flew from the peloton, splintering the bunch into several groups.

With five laps to go, a large chase group made their way to the leaders, with Amore & Vita distanced. Attacks by Rally and UnitedHealthcare re-fractured the large front peloton, leaving a new breakaway up the road.

Pinot to lead FDJ at Criterium du Dauphine - News Shorts

In a video posted on the team's website, FDJ today announced their roster for the upcoming Criterium du Dauphine, which starts June 5 and runs through June 12.

Thibaut Pinot, coming off a second place overall at the Tour de Romandie, will lead the French team in the eight-day Tour de France tune-up race. Pinot is mixing up his Tour de France preparation slightly this year, as he chose to race Tour de Suisse last year before going on to winning the penultimate stage at the Tour and finishing 16th overall there.

Pinot will be joined in Dauphine by William Bonnet, Matthieu Ladagnous, Steve Morabito, Sebastien Reichenbach, Anthony Roux, Jeremy Roy and Arthur Vichot, who recently was second at Boucles de l'Aulne – Chateaulin.

UCI will increase personnel at races to monitor safety compliance

The UCI on Monday announced that it will “significantly” increase the number of personnel it sends to races to monitor compliance with safety protocols. The announcement comes on the heels of a massive crash at the Tour of Belgium that caused stage 3 to be cancelled. The crash occurred when two motorbikes in the race collided in front of the peloton.

The UCI said Monday it was joining the Belgian cycling federation to investigate the circumstances that caused that incident.

The UCI is also looking into the size and power of race motos to determine how those factors have evolved in recent years and whether they are responsible for the increased number of vehicle-rider collisions.

“Safety is an absolutely vital issue for the UCI and our stakeholders, and it is crucial we do all in our power to protect the riders from unnecessary risks,” UCI President Brian Cookson said in a statement released with Monday’s announcement.

“We have seen too many incidents involving motorcycles, and that is why we recently adopted clear new rules governing how vehicles must be driven in races. Right now, our thoughts are with Stig Broeckx, his family, friends and teammates from Lotto Soudal.”

Broeckx was the most severely injured rider in the Belgian mele, suffering a fractured eye socket, a bruised lung and bleeding in the brain from the incident, which occurred 65km into stage 3 of the race and involved 10 other riders.
