After one of the hottest summers Britain has experienced in around 40 years, autumn is well and truly here in the northern hemisphere.

The nights are drawing in and soon we will be swapping out our summer wardrobe for winter bib tights and base layers.

Italian clothing brand Sportful has sent some of their highlights from this season's collection, including a rain jacket with an insulated chest, reflective bib tights, and a jacket you can take the lid off - sort of.

And so it ends: eight magnificent days of racing around stunning Innsbruck, Austria, where the world champions in the disciplines of time trialling and road racing, at junior, under-23 and elite levels, were crowned.

The new world champions now have 12 months as custodians of their rainbow jerseys before we do it all again in Harrogate, Yorkshire, in the UK.

Can the Dutch women's team dominate again, as they have at the championships for the past two years? Will Spain's Alejandro Valverde still have the hunger, and indeed the legs, to defend his title, or will we see 2015, 2016 and 2017 road race world champion Peter Sagan take back 'his' rainbow jersey? And what kind of progression will we see from the junior riders, like Remco Evenepoel, who won both the time trial and the road race in the junior men's category?

Wout van Aert's Stevens Super Prestige - Gallery

Cyclo-cross champion Wout van Aert finished second place at the Jingle Cross World Cup in Iowa last Saturday, being edged out by Toon Aerts (Telenet Fidea) after a mistake on lap 6 of the second World Cup race of the season.

After Mathieu van der Poel switched to Canyon bikes earlier this year, Van Aert took on the Stevens Super Prestige framesets, which were formally used by the Dutchman.

Van Aert's mechanic at the Jingle Cross event said the stock frameset is temporary and a custom-painted frameset, commemorating Van Aert's world championship title, will be used when the cyclo-cross World Cup returns to Europe later this month.

Previously riding a Felt frameset, Van Aert retains the SRAM and Zipp components, finishing kit and wheels used on last season's bike.

Like many other aero road bikes of the same era (the first-generation Specialized Venge, Scott Foil, Giant Propel), many forgave the Cervélo S5 for some shortcomings in favour of its aero benefits. These niggles included slightly muted handling, a firm ride and carrying a bit of extra weight compared to its more traditionally tubed siblings.

Over the last year, however, there’s been something of a revolution in aero road — the new Madone rides beautifully, the latest Venge is a lightweight speedy dream-machine, BMC’s Timemachine road is a masterpiece of integration, and Cannondale’s debut SystemSix hits the handling high-notes. In other words, the new S5 has a lot to live up to.

The 2018 UCI Road World Championships concluded on Sunday, with the elite men's road race bringing the curtain down on a week of racing in which 12 world titles were awarded. 

With the dust settled in Innsbruck, here is your essential round-up of the action from the 2018 Worlds. 

ELITE

Men's road race

Alejandro Valverde finally has the rainbow jersey. The Spaniard had come close on so many occasions, with six medals already in his locker, but he finally fulfilled his 15-year quest on Sunday with victory in Innsbruck.

Though a few big names, such as Michal Kwiatkowski and Simon Yates, had already fallen out of contention, a sizeable group arrived at the foot of the devilishly steep Höll climb in the 258.5km race's finale. By the top, Valverde had emerged alongside Romain Bardet and Michael Woods as the leading trio, though Tom Dumoulin did manage to re-engage after the descent.

Party time for Van der Breggen as rainbow jersey plan comes together

Anna van der Breggen stood on the podium with a look of relief and satisfaction as she pulled on the rainbow jersey after winning the elite women's road race at the 2018 UCI Road Worlds Championships in Innsbruck, Austria, on Saturday. 

Mouthing the words to Dutch national anthem Wilhelmus van Nassouwe, she perked up and smiled when she noticed one particular section of fans wearing orange t-shirts with painted faces among the seas of spectators – three women who had travelled from Holland to see their childhood friend win her first world title.

"It was so special for me to see them because normally I don't have my people standing at the side of the road watching me race," Van der Breggen said. "For these World Championships, I knew that they were expecting a bit more from me.

"I went out for dinner on Thursday night with 14 people, and it was really special to have the feeling that they had all travelled here for me, and to watch and support me in this race. Of course, it makes it even more special to be able to win this race in front of my closest family and friends."

Van der Breggen's victory at the World Championships has been a long time coming. She had won every major event in professional women's cycling with gold medals, winners' trophies and title jerseys from the Olympic Games, Giro Rosa, Tour of Flanders, all three Ardennes Classics and Strade Bianche. The list is long. 

The only glaring void in her palmarès was the World Championship title, and, after a decade of racing, the pressure had mounted, and she had begun to struggle with the idea that she may never be a world champion.
