André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) staged a come-from-behind coup on stage 4 of the Volta ao Algarve, taking out a furious bunch sprint finish from John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo). Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNl-Jumbo) was third in a sprint that was decided between the top three by millimeters.
Jasper Stuyven opened up the sprint for Degenkolb, but Greipel was able to catch on and come past just before the line, while Groenewegen was a bike length further back when the German champion made his final push. The Dutch champion had an impressive final kick and threw his bike full force, lifting his front wheel off the ground in an attempt to win, but was just short.
The day's breakaway of Ryan Mullen (Cannondale-Drapac), Taco van der Hoorn (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Dion Smith (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and João Matias (LA Alumínios-Metalusa BlackJack), the latter of which was dropped with 50km still to race, was caught just 2km from the line after being out front for a full 195km on the race's longest stage.
Thanks to the breakaway sweeping up any intermediate sprint bonuses, the race lead of Primoz Roglic (LottoNl-Jumbo) remained unchanged. The Slovenian has a solid 22 seconds on Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky), with time trial winner Jonathan Castroviejo (Movistar) still in third at 36 seconds.
