Danny van Poppel (Sky) won stage 3 of the Vuelta a Burgos in a bunch finish in Villarcayo, beating Jean-Pierre Drucker (BMC) into second place, while Gianni Meersman (Etixx-QuickStep) took third.

The win was Van Poppel’s second of the week after he landed victory in a sprint on the opening day. Dimitriy Gruzdev, whose Astana team won Tuesday’s team time trial, retains the overall lead ahead of teammate Michele Scarponi.

The finale included the third category ascent of the Retuerta some 20 kilometres from the finish, and Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) tested his form ahead of the Vuelta a España by joining Kenny Elissonde (FDJ) on the attack near the summit, though the pair were swept up over the other side.
