Three riders, three different roles, and (likely) three very different turnouts for the SA riders taking part in Le Tour. – By Yentl Barros

This year there are three South Africans in the Tour de France — Reinardt Janse van Rensburg (Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka), Daryl Impey (Orica-GreenEdge) and Louis Meintjes (Lampre-Merida), all inside the top 100 on overall classifications after stage four.

Louis Meintjes

After riding for Team Dimension Data last year, 24-year-old climber Louis Meintjes returns to the Tour for Lampre–Merida in this year. Despite having met with a small crash during the second stage, Meintjes lies 30th on the GC and is 29 seconds behind the yellow jersey. Meintjes is also 5th overall in the young rider’s race.

Louis Meintjes’ placement after each stage:

Stage 1 – 188km from Mont Saint-Michel to Utah Beach: 123rd at 04h 14′ 05”+ 00′ 10”

Stage 2 – 183km from Saint-Lô to Cherbourg-Octeville: 32nd at 08h 35′ 07”+ 00′ 25”

Stage 3 – 222km from Granville to Angers: 32nd at 14h 35′ 01”+ 00′ 25”

Stage 4 – 237.5km from Saumur to Limoges: 48th at 05h 28′ 30”

Reinardt Janse van Rensburg

27-year-old rider Reinhart Janse van Rensburg returns to the Tour for Team Dimension Data after playing a pivotal role in the sprints for the African team last year.

His efforts during the first four stages of this year’s Tour place him in 93rd on the GC.

Janse van Rensburg’s placement after each stage:

Stage 1 – 188km from Mont Saint-Michel to Utah Beach: 148th at 04h 14′ 05”+ 00′ 10”

Stage 2 – 183km from Saint-Lô to Cherbourg-Octeville: 86th at 08h 37′ 02”+ 02′ 20”

Stage 3 – 222km from Granville to Angers: 98th at 14h 37′ 46”+ 03′ 10”

Stage 4 – 237.5km from Saumur to Limoges: 124th at 05h 29′ 27” + 00′ 57”

Daryl Impey

31-year-old Orica-GreenEdge rider Daryl Impey returns to the Tour in 2016 after having to withdraw last year due to a major crash in the third stage. After completing the longest stage of the Tour this year, Impey is 100th on GC.

Stage 1 – 188km from Mont Saint-Michel to Utah Beach: 48th at 04h 14′ 05”+ 00′ 10”

Stage 2 – 183km from Saint-Lô to Cherbourg-Octeville: 98th at 08h 37′ 48”+ 03′ 06”

Stage 3 – 222km from Granville to Angers: Impey finished in 104th at  14h 38′ 59”+ 04′ 23”

Stage 4 – 237.5km from Saumur to Limoges: 115th at  05h 29′ 02” + 00′ 32”
