Evelyn Stevens (Boels-Dolmans) won stage 2 at the Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile in her trademark aggressive style of racing on Sunday in Montenars. The American out-climbed her breakaway companions to take the win on the first mountain stage ahead of Italian favourite Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle High5) and Katarzyna Niewiadoma (Rabo-Liv).

Stevens' efforts landed her in the pink jersey of the overall leader. She now leads the classification by two seconds ahead of Niewiadoma and 18 seconds ahead of teammate Megan Guarnier.

Stage 2’s 111km race from Tarcento to Montenars was held in the heart of Friuli, held in honour of the tragic earthquake that destroyed the area of Gemona 40 years ago. It offered the peloton the first uphill finish in Montenars (446m - Cat. 2).

Megan Guarnier (Boels Dolmans) started the day in the overall lead after placing second in stage 1. She had an eight-second lead on both Niewiadoma and stage 1 winner Giorgia Bronzini (Wiggle High5).

But before the challenging finale, riders started the day with smaller circuits in Tarcentro. The route passed through Buja and San Daniele del Friuli, then passed the first intermediate sprint at the 64.5km and the second intermediate sprint at 85km, where the final phase of the race began. Elena Cecchini and her teammate Alena Amialiusik (Canyon - SRAM) won the two sprints, respectively.

The climb to Montenars began in Gemona del Friuli, with an average slope at 8-9%, but the route descended back to Artegna ahead of the last kilometre and the start of the climb in Gemona.
