Cheap power meters promised by Danish start-up

Power meters are increasingly popular with cyclists who want deeper performance data, but they’re quite pricey. That could be set to change with a new concept from a Danish startup company, which says it will give cut-price power meters to participants willing to send back their riding data, and help improve the product.

Participants will join ‘Team Zwatt’, which aims to create a large amount of real-world riding data that could help improve power meter accuracy. More than 1,000 participants have already signed up, and will receive crank arm-based power meters at a “really affordable” undisclosed price. Mountain bikers and cyclocross riders are welcome, not just roadies.

While this is the first time we've seen power meters crowdsourcing their development data from the public, it fits nicely into a general trend of power meters getting more and more affordable, particularly models that fit strain gauges into the crank arm, like Stages.

The commitment

In return for their cheap power meter, participants must commit to riding with it for at least 30 minutes per month, using a custom app that collects detailed information on all aspects of the ride (we don't know what punishment lies in wait for customers who don't fulfil their side of the bargain). Metrics covered include power, cadence, torque effectiveness and pedal smoothness, all transmitted simultaneously via Bluetooth Smart and ANT+ to any compatible device.

"In our ideal scenario, a power meter is an affordable product for any amateur cyclist," says creator Rolf Ostergaard. “This is the objective for SENSITIVUS gauge, the company organising Team ZWATT.”
