10 tips for safer city cycling

http://ift.tt/1X1G917

It goes without saying that staying safe while on the roads is a top priority. We’ve compiled 10 of our top tips to keep you out of danger when out on two wheels.

1. Assume doors will open

Getting doored is a shockingly common occurrence. Sadly, the only way to truly prevent this from happening is to keep a good distance between yourself and parked cars.

2. Don’t kerb crawl

Hanging about in the gutter isn’t a good look, it’s also the place where dirt and debris collects and so your tyres will likely get a hard time. More important still, staying close to a kerb gives you little room for error meaning a pothole or similar road defect could lead to a spill.

3. If you can’t see their mirrors…

…then they can’t see you. Simple as that.

4. Don’t box yourself in or tailgate vehicles

Try not to ride into a situation where you don’t have a clear exit. Mingling amongst stationary traffic is a good example – darting through a queue of stationary traffic will usually not give drivers enough idea that you are there, and is a situation that can deteriorate quickly. Don’t get trapped in stationary traffic – don’t ride into a situation where you don’t have a clear route out – they won’t see you if you're moving alongside them.

5. Look at eyes and tyres

6. Boss your lane (when necessary)

7. Be particularly careful around large vehicles

8. Don’t be an amber gambler

9. Look further ahead

10. Don’t be a sheep
